It is a free country, you don't need an official call to join a protest or to show support to a cause if you think that it is fair (and you do it in a respectful manner towards the people directly affected), but I somewhat agree and I don't like when white protesters take the spotlight on this.

My comment was more about how this was picked by some white americans to just make noise because it is on the media, even though if they really want to help these communities there are bigges issues that are actually killing them every day.

what i'm saying is that people didn't go to protest dapl on a whim. whenever you choose a cause you're walking a way from thousands more.

seems to me like what you're saying is that white americans don't protest for a cause, but for self and media hype. dapl is immediate and help has been requested by tribal leadership. poverty and symptoms of poverty in native american communities here and in canada have been ignored since as long as i can remember. your argument sounds to me like apathetic white guilt, for example me saying 'i want to adopt a needy child from russia' and your reply being 'that is pointless and won't help anything so long as their are children in need here in the us' so i just put my head down and say forget the kids i won't adopt from anywhere cause i can't adopt everyone all the time.

I don't feel that way, and I said that you can always join and support... but I saw white protestors trying to take the lead on this and honestly I don't like when white people take the spotlight on this issue because this should be always handled by the affected ones, and they deserve all the recognition as a sovereign people refusing the construction of something they do not want in their land (but I guess that is delusional).

there were also instigators that were connected to/employees of the pipeline co. i'm pretty sure this is much bigger than the tribe and no dak residents. willing to wager the mess from the protesters will be minuscule in comparison to the mess dapl will create.

Yes there certainly were. That came as a response to defacing and damaging their equipment, trespassing, threatening the employees that simply were caught in the middle et al. Does it justify the company's excuse to "punch back" with private security and attack dogs? Heck no. Out of control. It was like watching two jacked up high school dudes one-upping each other with revenge-filled vendettas. Stupid on the part of both the protesters and the company.

Everyone has the right to stand up for what they believe is wrong but surely there's a better way to make that message known without hurting people and damaging their stuff? Again from both sides which are at fault with how they were treating each other so disrespectfully. Then the police got dragged into it. Made to look like the bad guys which in turn causes many people in the states think that North Dakotans are racists and cruel people. I've seen the facebook posts calling the lot of us many colorful things.

The whole thing was just ugly. For everyone. In the end the protest did more damage than good and more than people think. A kind of damage that isn't even tangible.

My point was that the aftermath of all this greatly damaged the relationship, which that can take years to build up, between the tribe and residents here in general; something much deeper than the "stuff" that was left and abandoned to become someone else's problem. Kind of like an oil spill I guess...but at least a company might take some responsibility to clean it up.

so now in your world the color of the protester is important

good lord...isn't the point of protest to band together?  For many any attention to the cause is good attention be it black white, red or purple.

I don't think so, it is a way to disparage the native american community, AGAIN... I'm not saying that ONLY native american can protest, but it is disrespectful to them and to their culture to try to own the debate in their behalf.

Actually this thread was about how un environmentally friendly the environment protesters where. It had nothing to do with disparaging Native Americans

wasn't there a pipeline employee that was shot while he was pretending to be a protestor? speaking personally i've never once thought nd residents are racist or cruel. i should hope all fingers point to dapl and rest there.

the whole dapl thing reminds me of 'earnest goes to camp'. anway, i feel like we're in the last 15 minutes of that movie. standing rock as very few options at this point to stop anything and we shouldn't be questioning the intentions of those who have given their time/money/presence to assist.

i can't get on board with the damage from the protesting is intangible. just wait for that first spill. doubtful 'a company' will ever take responsibility to clean anything up without being pushed.

so your argument is that the purpose of the protest (for white people/hipsters) was to "disparage the native american community"? that doesn't even make sense.

from the video you posted above the act of disparaging was attempted most visibly by the pipeline co. i get being mad about white kids being spoiled and not knowing the true weight of things, but we shouldn't lose sight of the enemy here and that is big oil and the government coddling of big oil. we have to get on to other sources of energy and get systems of delivery for the energy of the future in place.  because meanwhile..this sort of thing is going to continue affecting water/life all over the country http://bigstory.ap.org/article/6487e9e57a8e41d28397a0d8e25882f0/massive-2013-oil-spill-north-dakota-still-not-cleaned
