Convincing Answers to K1 Interview Questions?

Hello Folks,

I hate to put everyone in the same bag, but I've been reading some horrific stories about certain COs, in select locations (i.e. high-fraud countries), and how they don't even give the interviewee (beneficiary) a chance to explain/prove that the relationship he/she have with the petitioner is indeed a bona fide one!

Some, I've read, will ask a question, and before you even open your mouth to answer it, they turn around and ask a different question (this is known as throwing red herring)! Some, appear to be not interested at all in seeing or hearing anything you have to say or have worked long and hard to prepare (chat logs, email, letters, photos, etc...)!

It is as if, they walk-in to the interview room with their mind already set and a decision already made to send you to AP, or hand you what appears to be an already prepared 221g form and send you on your way home!!! Hence, denying you a basic human right to fairly present your case, address any red-flags, and dissipate any preconceived suspicions they may have about your case (i.e. a significant age gap or limited face-to-face encounters, etc...).

With that said, there are other COs who are fair, good listeners, and reasonable and may give the beneficiary the benefit of the doubt and a chance to fairly present their case. In light of that, I would like to ask you to please share your experiences and what you deem to be reasonable/convincing answers to some of the common (and somewhat stumping) questions asked during a K1 Interview...

Note that for most, if not all, of these questions there is no such thing a "correct answer". Each person may have different circumstances/answers, hence, the goal here is to amass and share as many "reasonable answers", as possible. Meaning answers which are not frown upon by most COs, and which appear to be logical and somewhat convincing.

Example:

Q1: Why a K1- Visa.....why couldn't/didn't you get married in your country of residence?

Q2: Why (contrary to what's common in your country) would you marry someone much older or younger than you?

Q3: Why after only 1-2 trips in the past 4-5 years (and each one lasting only 1-2 weeks) you decided to get married...why so soon?!

Q4: It says here that you've met on a dating site...what were you exactly looking for?

Q5: Why not marry someone local?

Thank you in advance!

The most convincing answer is the truthful one.

You don't want to "borrow" a story from someone else here an VJ, no matter how romantic and convincing, because if it is not true, and the CO finds out, they will not believe ANYTHING you say.  At worst, it could be considered material missrepresentation and a lifetime ban.

Thank you Penguin! No one wants to "borrow" anything from anyone. On this site, we learn from each others' mistakes and try to be better prepared by learning about other members past experiences. As for your comment about "The most convincing answer is the truthful one." I couldn't agree more with your statement and no one again is encouraging people to lie or misrepresent the fact/truth! But if you, or other members, were asked these questions (which by the way are NOT personal and are rather generic), then please share your answers so others can learn how to best tackle and position them. On a side note, let me share with you a recent experience that someone on this forum had to deal with... Not long ago, a beneficiary, was asked why he/she did not marry in their country of residence and instead wants to marry in the States. The person answered truly and honestly and said that he/she believes that a CR-1 process usually takes longer than a K1 visa (which we all know to be true) and that he/she is longing to be with their love one sooner rather than later... The CO mocked their answer and even started arguing with the beneficiary and saying that the CR-1 takes just as long and can be shorter at times! So if you're ever asked that question, you may have a special case and should answer accordingly, but for me, that's a logical and reasonable answer, YET it was puked on by the CO. So go figure!... And that's what I'm talking about: Learning from others, who may have gone through the same process, may help you, me, and others position our honest and truthful answers accordingly...

Thread is moved from the K-1 Process forum to the Embassy/Consulate forum -- topic involves that phase.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
