Interesting...for me, speaking was the last and most difficult hurdle w/ any of the languages I learned (...and of course that is the critical one in order to be understood by those around you). I agree with you, that speaking and writing is connected...and part of 'active fluency', but for me, the speech is that which I forget first before any of the other components. For example, I learned to read/write and speak Spanish, in fact it was my minor in college, way back when. ;) My fluency served me well when I was unable to find a job to save my life, (dot.com slump) and I used my Spanish fluency to teach school as a substitute in bilingual classes. Once I started in my current job/career, which does not involve the use of my spanish, I find myself floundering in my spoken spanish....but I can understant it w/ absolutely no problem (I regularly watch spanish movies w/out the subtitles) and can also write it well enough to be understood. But I guess w/ any foreign language, the key to "maintenance" is practice right? Regardless of whether it is reading, writing or speaking....there is a danger of losing all three if one does not actively practice these skills. :)

That's unusual; usually you lose writing before speaking. But yes, the key to maintenance is practice, i.e. use it or lose it. That also can apply to your native language; my grandmother's native language was Polish, but by the time she was in her 80s she could not speak it anymore. A guy I knew in HS came to the US from Romania when he was about 9; by HS graduation he couldn't speak Romanian anymore. Now THAT'S weird, particularly since his younger sister still could.

That probably may have a lot to do w/ wanting to lose the language in a somewhat misguided belief that it would help in assimilation? (I know some immigrant parents choose to speak English only w/ their children thinking this will help them aquire the english more quickly, thereby assimilating more quickly in the 'mainstream'.)

I came here from Romania when I was 9, but my mother tongue is Hungarian. It is now 22 years later and I am still completely fluent to a native speaker level (read/write/speak) in both languages. The language you learn at a very young age, especially your mother tongue, I think is never lost completely. It may remain 'dormant' but w/ some practice it will come back easier than if you had to start learning the language from scratch, IMO. :)

According to his sister, he wanted to speak Romanian. He just...couldn't. It was bizarre; I'd never seen anyone lose their native language so completely and so quickly. My grandmother pretty much lost her native language, but it took her several decades.

Certainly is a strange case....my sister was 5 1/2 when she came, yet even she hasn't managed to loose the Romanian. As Hungarian is our native language, and she was w/ grandparents (who speak no Romanian) a lot more than I was during the period right before we emigrated, she never quite learned to speak Romanian...but she understands everything perfectly and does speak fairly well if she needs to. So I guess its a question of desire coupled w/ linguistic talent? I know some people can learn languages much easier than others...something about having an ear for it? I find that I can repeat things (upon first try) in a language I've never heard or studied, and usually get the intonation right....I don't know what I'm saying, but the natives tell me my accent is quite good. ;) Yet others have a quite heavy accent in any language other than their mother tongue. So...go figure, right?

Hmm...

These scumbags, whoever they are that lives around here, needs to re-evaluate their life. Whatever language they speak is not the problem with me, although, my post earlier indicated that I have something against hearing Spainish music. The problem is hearing music the same music (same title) everyday (in this case Spainish) at low frequency, high amplitude (maximum dB) will make you go crazy. Especially, if the person suffering from this has a reading disease and thinking disease that makes them think 24/7 and read 24/7. (Note: Some point in this statement there's an exaggeration there. If you don't catch it then, well, I cannot help you.)

Hmm...

Many of the posters replied a heartening defense towards their culture. If you felt that I have offended, I'm sorry. My expression towards this boom car nonsense suffers from a lack of description so in effect I may have inadvertently implied wrong judgment and used incorrect statements.

If you say so, oh chosen one.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I don't understand your complaint. Are you angry at your neighbors playing their stereo loud or the stereos of 'boom cars' driving by and at stop lights?

Our Hispanic neighbors used to play tejano music. Hate that sh!t, but I didn't get all racist on them over it. I just asked them to turn it down. In Spanish. (They did so, politely.)

#######?! Huh? You don't get it do you? You start a thread by saying, in effect, that the loud Spanish music of Puerto Ricans has caused your "ear to decrease in...sensitivity" and as such you want to file a lawsuit for compensation. The very fact that you felt the need to single out a particular ethnic/language group as the cause of your problem was found to be offensive...and people pointed that out to you. Instead of apologizing at that time for causing offense w/ your 'lack of description' (you don't even know what you need to apologize for) you continue to antagonize by saying:

I have Puerto Rican friends...They said to me, those are the people that have give people a perspective that is bad for Peurto Ricans.

The "Its OK for me to stereotype, because I have a friend from that place and he feels the same way" excuse is just brainless especially for someone w/ 'a reading disease and thinking disease that makes them think 24/7 and read 24/7.' (yes we got your exagerration, so no need to help us).

What's worse though....the thread finally dies down on its own....and you go an resurrect it almost a month later w/ an even more antagonistic post:

The housing projects here consists a majority of Spainish speakers! It's so weird. These people need to get a job, learn English, and adapt to culture. I live nearby them, and I am Asian. English is my second language. I speak better than these people, not only that, my English is superior compared to most English speakers as well. Not bad for English as a second language.

I love to call these people lazy bums, scums, pigs, etc...I know it's mean. But, because they give up learning English, I like to put them down. If they think I'm wrong, they just need to prove that they are better with English.

Anyway...this is way off topic. The point being, these people don't know any better with the noise. They are alot older than I am, and are stupid.

Using pejorative terms (such as your 'lazy bums, scum, pigs') to describe any ethnic group, on an Immigration web site, no less, is NOT acceptable!

AND your lame a$$ statement in effect relying on your inability to correctly explain your initial point as the reason for "inadvertently" offending people?!?? First you claim superiority because your ESL skills are so great, (uh...that would be a no, not really!) and now you want to say that you offended people without meaning to because you could not express yourself effectively! You just don't, or don't want to, get it!!!

These people will shoot me. I remembered one point, the entire neighborhood suffered from a deflated tire on their car because it was punctured with a knife. About 100 cars. It's not a matter of race though. Very hard to distinguish when the community is full of Spanish speakers.

Perceive people like what? You're the one not listening....must be the hearing loss due to the loud "Spainish" music.
