well, I told some of u, but, this week I started a new job @ Smithfield, a food processing and packin plant, specifically, pork, lots and lots of pork.. I started as a QA supervisor, not bad money, not a lot of hard work (as actually cutting the meat, which looks hard), just lots of walking in steel toes, and lots of noise.. there's a nice niche there for bilingual people, most of these processing and mfting plants have a big # of hispanic workers, and supervisors and such are needed, so that's where the money is, looks like..

promotions @ the shack were low, and I just wanted to try something different.. besides, there were new 'profit formulas' meaning lowering comissions, and next year, lowering wages to some of the positions (as asst manager, like I was), and today I read Circuit city is firing 3,400 employees, to rehire them at lower wages, so looks like the whole retail business is 'lowering costs for more profit' (or firing a lot of people, lol)

btw, anyone who works in plants, or factories, can recommend me some real COMFY steel toe boots? i bought some cheapo boots @ wally world, when I tried them out, they felt nice, after 8 hours of continous walking my feet were hurting!! and my toes too, cuz of the steel toe and hardness of the boot.. someone told me I actually will have to spend 60-100 bucks on a decent pair of boots that are actually comfy, rather than 25 buck boots from walmart..

cheers

Holla, burro boy!

Red Wings are the way to go, generally. If you've got a store down there that caters to 'worker man' occupations, get over to it (you know, a store that sells Carhartts and the like).

Up here, a lot of the plants give an annual allowance for steel toe shoes. Like, $100 bucks a year for one pair. You might check with your HR people about that.

I have Danner's(acadia model), awesome boot, cost me nearly $400 in Canada a few years back. Mine are not steel toed though,I'm sure there are some on the website (and much cheaper) I wore mine while in the military, so some days they were on my feet for nearly 20 hours and loved them!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Red Wings all the way!!!

Hi Pedroh

As you know, I live in the Triangle and often when I pass Smithfiled exit on I 40 on my way to Wilmington, I wondered about what goes on in the slaughter houses. I also recall horror stories about the place on NPR. Since then, I've been curious about the place. I have included the links to some related stories and would like to know how accurate they are . Would appreciate hearing from you your own impression of the place.

Cheers

Good luck with the new job  I used to work at Monford's of Colorado back in the 70s. That was a meat packing plant and it was actually a pretty good job. They ended up laying a lot of people off because of a really bad winter so the next thing I know I am in the Corps! :P
