Selective service sign up

Hey all. Quick question. My husband came to the US when he was 27. From the sss website anyone over 26 it's "too late to register". I have friends who are getting ready for citizenship and they were told that he needs a selective service number even though he too was over 26 when he came to the states. So now they are being held up because of that as they were told that they have to have a number.

Based on that, what are your guys' recommendations on that? Obviously citizenship is a few years away but if we gotta get a number, I'd like to do that now.

If he did not have to register for Selective Service, there is no "number" that would have been assigned to him. From whom did this information come? Exactly who told this to your friends?

If he arrived in the US for the first time at the age of 27 or older then he isn't required (and, indeed, cannot) register for Selective Service.

Of course there's no number as They didn't sign up for one since he is over 26. BUT a person at USCIS told them to get one so now they are stuck waiting for the number. They had called asking about it and that's the answer they got.

What other members have told you is correct, but you said your friend was told so when "getting ready for citizenship," so it can't be the USCIS officer(s) that are handling the case, right?

I'm asking because it just can't be USCIS adjudicating officers who said that--That means some of them really don't know what they're doing, which is kinda scary...

Is it possible that your friend(s) accidentally presented some information incorrectly, and USCIS was simply asking for an Information Status Letter? That'd make more sense.

While there is no selective service number that you or your friend can present (since you did not, and were not required to, register), there are a handful of interview experiences on VJ were people who were not required to register were asked to provide proof that they were not registered. This seems like a strange request to me... the only reason I can think of is that the interviewer wants to use possible prior selective service registration to determine if the applicant lived in the US earlier than he said he did... but this is a ridiculously ineffective way to check.

Anyway; if you've got time, you can request a status/information letter from SSS. It'll just say you were never registered. That's all you can do. I'd say that its very unlikely that you'll need it; almost no one who isn't required to register is asked for it. But that's all you can present if you're asked for any SSS documents.

It's possible for sure. She said "they called immigrations", so I assume this is USCIS. When they were filling out the N-400 they came across the SSS number. She wasn't sure about it so she called in and then got that answer. Maybe she meant some other place but just categorized it as immigration. I didn't ask into it other than for the brief moment that the topic came up in conversation just because I didn't look into it, and don't know much about it, as my husband didn't need to sign up for it.

OK, now it makes sense, when she called USCIS, she's most likely reached their customer service, they're NOT immigration officers, and because she didn't file the application at the time, she wouldn't be able to reach Level 2, who actually have access to USCIS' internal system...

AKA spoke to a Tier 1 rep. The "friend" might as well have called my mom. She is as equally uninformed about USCIS policy as they are.
