As my colleague Jim Newell wrote, Donald Trump’s angrily defensive posture Tuesday at a press conference detailing his fundraising for veterans groups was evidence that the press had finally found a way to rattle the presumptive GOP nominee. “Belligerence in reporters’ faces is a sign that the reporters in question have done something worthwhile and, by applying pressure, forced an insecure public figure to bend,” Newell wrote. Later that same day, the Associated Press found more evidence of just how far the media had forced Trump to bend.

Josh Voorhees is a Slate senior writer. He lives in Iowa City.

The newswire reached out to all 41 different groups the presumptive GOP nominee name-checked at the press conference and, of the 30 that responded, “about half said they had received checks from Trump just last week,” roughly four months after the fundraiser in question and weeks after reporters began pressing Trump to document the donations.

It gets worse: Several of those checks, including the personal one for $1 million that Trump cut himself, were dated May 24, 2016, aka the very same day that Trump faced pointed questions from the Washington Post about both the amount of money he raised at his January fundraiser and the amount that had made its way to veterans charities. “You know, you’re a nasty guy,” Trump told the Post reporter, David A. Fahrenthold, who had already detailed discrepancies in the campaign's version of events earlier that week. “You’re really a nasty guy. I gave out millions of dollars that I had no obligation to do.” (On Tuesday, Trump was still sticking to his story. “Most of the money went out quite a while ago,” he said at the press conference without offering any evidence to support that claim

No matter how bad it gets, this will do nothing but strengthen his position amongst his followers.

Actually I barely care. I spoke badly of Trump months back. He's a clown in many ways, but at this point I find it very difficult not to vote for him if the alternative is Hillary. She's so bad I just don't really give a f anymore, I would vote in a chimpanzee if it kept her out. The democrats thought they'd take a criminal and make her president. I will never support that. I staunchly oppose the dynastic aspirations of this utterly ineffective and deceitful individual.

Good luck!

That's the point. How can you point out Hillary's missteps but ignore Trump's? Between his university scamming thousands of dollars out of hard working Americans, his criminal ties to the mob, this debacle right here, not to mention the hundreds of issues that come up daily, what makes him any better than Hillary? You make it sound like Trump is an honest man when he's a swindler of the highest order.

You can't claim the moral high ground with the Democrats but sit back and literally let the GOP put someone with LESS of a moral center in the White House. Clinton might be terrible, but you can't argue that Trump is any better.

I'm a one issue voter as of this year (scalia's death). I'll vote for the 2nd. Even if that means Trump.

For me, one of the most important issues is China and their actions in the South China Sea, or West Philippine Sea.

I know Hillary is aware of what's happening and has spoken against China's actions.

I know that the Libertarian response will too isolationist for me.

And Trump doesn't seem to know much about it. His entire foreign policy seems to be about building walls and keeping Muslims out. The world is far more complicated than that.

Trump scares me too much to consider voting for him.

You don't live in California, or are not aware of the California / NY lawsuits currently working their way up through the court system.

In California, the 2nd amendment is very much on the table. We already are dealing with regulations on par with say Germany or other European nations, and this year they are piling it on.

i've never been hyper concerned about perceived threats to the 2nd amendment. if california's gun laws are too strict for you, why don't you move. personally i'm sick of all this gun grab nonsense at the expense of sensible gun control.

Last time I checked California was part of the US. Why should I have to move due to ignorant totalitarian politicians in sacramento?

Here is a sampling of California's wonderful gun laws:

AB1673 - Ban on materials that could be easily converted to a receiver. (bans aluminum blocks, random pieces of metal...I kid you not.

Gavin's "Safety for All Initiative" - requires a second license for ammo purchases (keep in mind California already requires one - the Firearm Safety Certificate) and confiscates magazines previously grandfathered by past laws.

AB2607 - Furthers previous "gun restraining orders" so that larger segments of the population can file that a person's guns be confiscated without due process. (The previously law limits to immediate family members only). This is especially harsh because California has a history of not returning property that was confiscated wrongly.

This is just the tip of the iceburg.....

By the way thats BS. that you would tell some one to move if they don't like their rights being taken away.

Pure BS. Reminds me of the old days when some of the bigoted ppl here in the old OT would tell foreign spouses to leave the country if they don't like our laws.

like i said, seriously not at all important to me. if i want to buy a gun for protection, i can. i don't feel that right is being threatened where i'm at. if i want a cc permit, i can get one. not worried about losing that right either. if i need to get an additional permit to buy ammo, not a big deal. i mentioned moving if you don't like it because i hear "why don't you move" allll the time in reference to 'not liking' state legislation. state's rights, state issue, state decides. a state can have very strict gun laws, that doesn't mean the 2nd is threatened across the board. that's just how this circus works.

In the case of South Pacific he will build a net not a wall

not really, you're taking your state level proposed bills and telling me that my 2nd amendments rights in total are being threatened. bs.

right, i'm so bigoted against guns because i stand by a state's right to regulate ownership.
