A comment/opinion on the citizenship test:

Every state has their own educational requirements so it could be different, but in my state grade school children start learning geography. By the time you have finished secondary school most have spent a year learning Texas history, two years learning US history and a half year learning government. If you graduate from university you will probably study history/government again. So I don't think it's too much to ask of immigrants who wish to be citizens to dive in and study 100 questions about the country where they live. It is doable and you only have to get six correct to pass.

And correction to what I said before--it isn't multiple choice. It's given orally with some questions having multiple correct answers and some only one answer.

"What is Benjamin Franklin known for?" (Many possible answers)

"Which ocean is on the east coast?" (One answer)

It's the study aides that are multiple choice on the practice tests.

Do you even need to become a citizen? Can't you just live in the US with your USC spouse without having to go through the naturalization? I'm not sure how this works.

Because what's NOT hard to others may be hard to some. You should never assume that everyone has the same knowledge or abilities. Without being rude I don't know history to my own country let alone another one. I didn't study history and nor did I excel in exams as I don't sit written tests very well. Believe me they would laugh me out of the room I'm sure

Sorry I'm highly concerned that these replies are coming through in a funny order. I appreciate that US citizens have a high amount of education on history but sadly I don't have that. I would be more than willing to learn about the country that I want to live with my USC partner and maybe take it at later date when I have had time to learn what I need to know. But I am also happy to just live in the US with the green card alone. Thanks again guys for all your help. :)

It's not like it requires any in-depth knowledge of history. You are given a booklet with 100 questions & answers, you simply study those. They can't ask you anything else besides those specific 100 questions & answers.

For someone whose native tongue is English & has average intelligence, this is an easy task.

Don't sell yourself short OP. :) If you ever want to (and you certainly don't have to) when the time comes, with a lot of love and support and help from spouse/family you might surprise yourself. The best way to take in knowledge isn't always through a book, but by experiencing it. Museums and historical sites, even learning on tv (though not always accurate can usually gain the basics and retain it easier). With time you'll pick up on basics, probably beyond even what is in the booklet.

No judgement passed on you ZOE. It was more of an explanation that American citizenship requires more effort than just an application. And I personally think it's an okay idea since we require our students to learn similar. If full citizenship appeals to you, you have at least four years to learn 100 things. Or you can remain a permanent resident forever as long as you don't abandon your status..

Abandoning Permanent Resident Status

You may also lose your permanent resident status by intentionally abandoning it. You may be found to have abandoned your status if you:

  • Move to another country, intending to live there permanently.
  • Remain outside of the United States for an extended period of time, unless you intended this to be a temporary absence, as shown by:
    • The reason for your trip;
    • How long you intended to be absent from the United States;
    • Any other circumstances of your absence; and
    • Any events that may have prolonged your absence.
    • Note: Obtaining a re-entry permit from USCIS before you leave, or a returning resident visa (SB-1) from a U.S. consulate while abroad, may assist you in showing that you intended only a temporary absence.
  • Fail to file income tax returns while living outside of the United States for any period.
  • Declare yourself a nonimmigrant on your U.S. tax returns.

I would definitely love to learn the history and the way the US is now. It's a beautiful place and love that my fiance is so knowledgeable and love her stories. I feel like I could learn a lot from her. She's one smart cookie. For now I think I am just focusing on me and my partner getting married and finally living together then somewhere in the future (like you say) when I have experienced the country and picked up information I will look into naturalisation. EM, I know you say a book is given and I have to learn those but that is easier for some than other. Unfortunately for me I don't learn like that as I am dyslexic and a tactile learner which I didn't really want to declare on here but as you do seem to be trying to help me I guess I should explain the reasons why the test may be difficult for me. The idea of tests scare the living daylights our of me. I really can't thank you all enough as you have supported me and answered some questions over the time I have been on here that I really couldn't find answers to. :)

Hi everyone :)

Hopefully I'm asking in the right thread!

I'm putting together my AOS package now. I'm filing I-485 together with I-131 and I-765 (EAD and AP). I've been trying to figure out how many items of evidence I need to file since I'm filing it all together.

Some say that if I file it all together, I only need 1 birth certificate (from me and husband), 1 marriage certificate etc. Other say each form requires its own evidence, so in my case it sounds like I have to attach 3 marriage certificates since I'm filing three documents. Also, how many passport photos do I need? 2 in total, or 2 per form I'm filing?

I hope someone can help me out, I'm mega confused! :)

Thanks!!

Thread is moved from General Immigration Discussion to the "AOS from K Visas" main forum.

----------

Consider the I-485 requirements to be one separate package unto itself.  Follow those instructions.

Consider the I-131 requirements to be one separate package unto itself.  Follow those instructions.

Consider the I-765 requirements to be one separate package unto itself.  Follow those instructions.

Compile each one fully and completely, as though each is the only package that you have to compile.

Then, by coincidence, the 3 separate packages all happen to be mailed off together in the same outer envelope. :)

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
