Quick question... I'm in the process of getting a divorce -- which is proving to be a rather long, arduous, process -- and my girlfriend is applying for a Tourist Visa to come visit in September. She's worried that she'll be denied because of my marital status, and nervous about questions concerning it.

How likely are such invasive personal questions at a Tourist interview, and what weight are they likely to have on her eventual approval or denial? (I would think my marital status would be at least irrelevant, and at most an indicator that my girlfriend can't marry me and so won't be able to stay after her visa expires).

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

PS: In general, what kinds of questions would they likely ask at the interview?

Which Consulate?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

She will be assessed and interviewed based on her merits and not who she is planning to see. Visa applications for tourists are a very individual thing.

If you are really worried, cancel the application and visit her in Germany yourself.

I doubt the marital status will come up other than a quick question.

However, her visiting a boyfriend may be an issue; young single women (especially from certain countries) have difficulty getting tourist visas because they may stay- even illegally, without marrying.

I already did. But now it's her turn.

Yeah, I know that getting the visa isn't the highest probability for her -- which is unfortunate. If they knew her, really, they'd know she's probably the least likely person in the universe to overstay. She's strongly committed to her studies there for at least the next three years.

a single, ukrainian woman has a hard time getting a tourist visa to america to visit a 'boyfriend' no they wont ask detail about your marital ect.. but yes, they will want strong ties to ukraine.. property, job ect.. and i know ukrainian girls are pretty! lol that is all against her.. i think it will be very hard and i think applying for a K1 so soon after you are divorced will be a red flag for her?

just have to apply and try.. but i would consider finalizing your divorce and going to visit her!

lol everyone on here 'claims' to be the least likely to overstay yet when you come here on a B2/VWP and are in love everyone seems to get married.. hey, i get it! it is WAYYY easier to AOS as an overstay on a visitor visa and wait here for 4 months then go home and wait a year ect.. and you are already here!!!!

trust me, even the people with the best intentions overstay and AOS on a tourist visa bc it is a legal path to a greencard!

she can show her studies and her program and how much she invested i guess.. show those ties and maybe that will work?

Well - an update. She had her interview in Munich. It lasted precisely for one question: why do you want to travel to the United States... And answering honestly -- sightseeing and visiting with me and my family -- ended the interview with an immediate denial. They didn't even give her a chance to present a case, look at any supporting documents, nothing.

We both knew the odds of getting this visa weren't good, but to be asked one question after spending so much time gathering everything and traveling and paying the application fee... it's just insulting. I have half a mind to complain to the Consul General.
