French Citizenship question (admins, feel free to move this to a more appropriate thread if necessary):

I (the American citizen) have been married to my husband (the French citizen) since January 5, 2013. We have been living in Boston, MA the entire time. At first I thought I could apply for French citizenship after 5 years of marriage, but my husband was at the French consulate yesterday, and they told him 4 years of marriage.

Has anyone on this site gone through the process of French citizenship through marriage? The 'lovely' French bureaucratic system is confusing the heck out of me, and I would love to be able to find a site like this to help me through the process. Especially where I need to give proof of my level of French, which I currently have no written documents proving that level. I know I will need to take one of the exams, so I just want to make sure I am taking the right one, at the right time, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi:

You are right about how bureaucratic the French government. First I want you to know that obtaining French citizenship is not as fast as the US citizenship.

I myself was looking in to it, and this summer I'm going to send my file. But my case is totally different than yours. My ancestor is actually and I think according to French laws the citizenship passes to the kid as long as you have a french parent. So if I prove my relationship to my ancestor I think I should be good.

However the website you are looking for is this:

http://www.jetaide.com/forum-droit-immigration-nationalite-francaise-467/

It's not as easy as this website but I think thats a place you can start at.

Good luck.

I am so glad someone posted on this topic. I am marrying a French man in 5 weeks (yipee) but we intend to stay in the US for a few years then move back to France, so I have been searching for information on how I can obtain French nationality. He is also going to obtain US citizenship so we will both be dual citizens. Thank you for the link to the website with the info.
