Ouch! really tempted to give mine to my folks to send in from the UK and pay the cheaper price and get them to bring it out to me the next time they visit after it came back. Or wait till I can visit for an extended period when it's due for renewal and do it myself, hoping it came back in time... thank goodness I have till 2013 to renew mine

You can apply up to 9 months before your passport is due to expire. As far as I know, where you are in the US immigration process has no bearing on UK passport renewal.

Thank you! Just wanted to be sure I don't need my passport for any part of the process as I won't have it...

Oh yes, good point. I'm not sure if you have to have your passport at the AOS interview, but it would be handy, esp. if they're still giving the I-551 stamp.

What happens when I send my passport for a name change but my Visa and immgration stuff was in my maiden name? My visa inside my passport obviously matches the name my passport was issued to, which was my maiden name. Will this cause any problems?

According the Embassy website only the one in DC Deals with passports!

I've been wondering about the name change thing too, having sent our AOS off last week i'm reluctant to part with my old passport just yet. Does anyone know when the best time would be to change it? Should we wait till after AOS has been approved? It's weird walking around with a passport in my maiden name...i feel fraudulent...lol

Hold on to your passports guys until you are approved.

I had an Infopass appointment prior to submitting the AOS docs and was told specifically not to send the passport for a name change until you get the GC. I have no idea whether the UK Embassy sends back the old passport but, I was told, it would be my responsibility to replace K-1 !!! How to go about doing it, I have no idea. So I'm holding tight to my passport for time being.

Ugh, this is fast turning into another nightmare of paperwork. I was born after January 1983 (just!) and from what I can tell they want my full birth certificate and my MUM's full birth certificate. Both she and I only have our one original copies of our birth certificates. So it looks like I will need to have her send off to get a copy of mine and her birth certificate. Plus I'll need to be sending off for more marriage certificates as we only have 2 left after having to submit it once or twice for AOS/my greencard.

All I want is to renew my passport and change it from my maiden name to my married name. UGH! So stressful. Looks like it is easier to prove you are s British citizen by naturalisation as they only require your naturalisation certificate!

Am I reading things wrong? Do I need to be sending these things into them? If I do will I get them back. Or will I have to call the undoubtedly expensive helpline? And then there comes the headache of whether or not I need a countersign! *pulls hair out*

I've been pulling my hair out too, its been around 9 months since i got my temp green card through the post, I looked at the paperwork back in Feb and gave up, we've since traveled to the UK and I didn't get too much hassle in customs still using it, looking on the uk direct gov websites it looks as though it would be a lot easier to go do the 1 week fast track renewal on our next trip over (as my passport doesn't expire till 2013 seems a lot easier), you go into the nearest regional office.. there's one near Victoria station in London we're probably going to head into next trip. you submit the regular easy paperwork, your old passport, pictures and with a name change it looks like your marriage cert and a few documents like bills and whatnot to concur with your name change, pay the fee which is about 30 quid more to do fast track & delivery, and a week later you get your passport delivered.
