Just so you are aware (I would be remiss if I didn't mention this now). In case a CR-1 visa is issued despite having been married for 2 years or more, it be can corrected upon entry to the US by showing the CPB Officer the marriage certificate showing having been married for 2+ years and thus entitled to IR-1 status.

My 2 year anniversary is coming up next week. I just paid my IV bill today and I'm about to submit my IV application next week. I'm wondering if there are any steps that I have to take so that the CR-1 visa turns into a permanent one? Or will it turn automatically?

It's automatic.

I had the same question couple of months ago. I coundnt find a definitive answer here on VJ as some people were saying its automatic while others were saying something different. I had my USC wife call NVC and the call rep told her we would have to call them to upgrade and also provide them with a marriage certificate.

I feel like it gets upgraded to IR-1 in some case and not others. When is your 2 year anniversary? Mine will be in June 2016 so I wont know about upgrading for a while.

Our still says CR-1 on NVC's website, even though we had our two year anniversary on May 14th, which might have to do with the fact that we gave our renewal date as our wedding date rather than our original wedding date (which was by proxy). We also called NVC about this and were told that the CO will address this at the time of interview.

Bring it up to the CO at the time of the interview. If you forget, you can still do it at time of POE, like Ryan H said.

Might be a good idea to remember to bring a copy of your marriage certificate to your POE.

Let us know what the NVC say about it. I would personally wanna get it upgraded to IR-1 while case is at NVC coz you never know if you'll get a rude CO or a rude CBP who wont do it.

NVC do not do anything to "upgrade" you. The IR1 status is given if you have been married for 2 or more years upon entry to the USA, nothing else. Should the green card be wrongly designated you can fix it within the USA. I would not bother trying to contact the NVC about this.
