I am on Social Security Disability income. I got into an accident years ago. My fiancée is now here and I was wondering if my SSI will be reduced once we get married. Right now, i just have enough to get by and I worry that if it gets lower... Well... it would be difficult for us. Does anyone here has an experience that they can share? It will be greatly appreciated.

If it's Social Security Disability (SSDI), it will not be reduced by a spouse's income. If it's Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your souse's income would be counted and it could get reduced.

I was not clear from your post which one you're actually getting because you mentioned both. Hope that helps!

Im on SSDI as well for the same reasons as you, I got married in Mexico and reported to social security offices i got married and they told me that it will affect my monthly check the second he moves in with me. So right now its not affecting me but when he moves in with me in California, then thats when i have to notify them again and they have to reevaluate my case.

I'm not on either one but I did call to ask since I've seen this question before and was curious. They told me that you have to let them know when he/she arrives as stated but it all depends if the spouse is working or not. If the spouse is not working then it wont change. Once the spouse has a job then it will be reduced or stopped depending on the amount the new job is adding to the household funds. Hope this helps.

If she doesn't work, it will not affect your amount at this time. If she starts working, then it would affect the amount you receive.

And no worries, most people don't realize there is a difference. I deal with both at my job so I've just had lots of experience with it!

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Most people will make more from a full time job them SSI benefits. The real problem is the loss of medicade/medicare for medical treatment.

One more question, from what I understand, my fiancée just got here so no AOS yet hence no work either. It won't affect my SSI at the moment since she is not working yet, right?

Your fiancé cannot file AOS until you marry her neither she can work without EAD which you can apply alongwith AOS
