Wisconsin Republicans plan vote on right-to-work next week

Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald announced the plan Friday on WTMJ radio, saying he expects Walker will sign the bill even though he doesn't have any assurances. Walker was in Washington on Friday for a National Governors Association meeting and his spokeswoman didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

Walker is a longtime supporter of right to work and even sponsored a bill when he was in the state Assembly in the early 1990s. But this year, as he eyes a White House bid, he urged the Republican-controlled Legislature not to take up the issue because he saw it as a distraction.

Unlike Act 10, which Walker proposed, the right-to-work push is coming from Republicans who control the Legislature.

"I think we can do this next week without it getting really ugly," Fitzgerald said on WTMJ. "We'll see next week whether the Capitol blows up. I don't know."

I wonder why the timidity on Walker's part. This could only endear him further with the Republican base.

Yeah, it's not fair that public sector workers get to be represented by unions, when private sector workers for the most part are the mercy of their employers. The best way to keep Americans scared is make sure they know that they can be replaced at any time, so they best not think about using their supposed right to free speech in public.

Attend anti-Walker rally and get extra credit, English professor tells students

Professor Beth Lueck offered her students extra credit to attend a Thursday night rally against the proposed 13 percent cut to the university system, according a posting on an “internal university website that posts homework assignments and class announcements,” the free-market MacIver Institute said Thursday morning.

Walker is wanting financial backing right now and Social Republicans still rule the party.

Right to work sucks

States that have it generally have low unemployment.

What's not fair is how so many unions have forgotten their original reason for being, to represent and advocate for their members, and become political fundraising and agitating entities. Until they return to their core purpose, they will be fair game for this kind of legislative action.

It actually is fair The supreme court opened up this can of worms. The same rulings that created corporate citizens and super-PAC also applies to unions.

You can't change all the rules and then complain that the game is different. Unions support there interests the same way corporations do. By spending large amounts of money.

Whatever gave you the misguided impression I was in favour of the Citizens United ruling?

I support getting big money out of politics - all of it. Why not restrict political donations to individual citizens, to a upper limit of, say, $2,500? Take politics back to the people.

As for some unions, but not all, their current political agitation is unfair to their membership, more than anything. More and more, union members are seeing less representation of their direct concerns by their unions, for ever-increasing Union dues.

Unless unions remember their core purpose and get back to representing their members, I can see continuing erosion of their reach and membership.

I didn't say you support it. I said you can't call it unfair. At least it's not unfair between unions and corporations. If anything, it's unfair to the people. It's not the union members who are misrepresented, it's the average citizen.

We had a surplus of state tax this year. Due to marijuana sales of course. State law says anything collected over a certain amount has to be refunded to the taxpayers. State Democrats and Republicans finally found a consensus. Both parties agreed they don't want to give it back. We may vote them in to represent us, but they mostly represent themselves.

Union members, in many unions, are greatly misrepresented, especially in the construction field. Not only that, but PLAs, whereby Union labour is required for a project, are a cost to the owners, the public, whose funds are a common driver for them, and to the companies forced to employ unfit workers, simply because they are Union members. It's more akin to racketeering than worker representation. <_<

All of which has nothing to do with right to work legislation and the unions.

Yes, some are misrepresented. I said they are better represented right now than "the people". As in my example, the representatives of the people do what they want and regular folk just have to suck it. I know it's off topic but just following on your "take politics back to the people" comment. Which was a follow up to your "it's not fair" complaint.

I guess unions could stick to arguing for 2% raises or something. Maybe that makes the world more fair. If they feel that time is better used keeping supportive legislators in office or getting new ones elected then that's fair too. Members can change that if they don't like it.
