Okay, so maybe this is a somewhat dumb thread, but...I have a terrible migraine right now. Why am I on-line if I have one? Well, I am at one of my university's computer labs right now, waiting for one of my classes to begin (so I can't go home, in other words).

I was just wondering who else here gets migraines (or knows someone who gets them) and how severe, how often, what kind, etc. What do you do for your migraines as well? Do you practice biofeedback? Do you take prescription or OTC medication?

Anyway, I'm just being inquisitive. Share if you feel like it. :)

I get them too. It's hereditary in my family. My first one was on my honeymoon when I married my ex 18 yrs ago. Should've been a sign....

I take drugs to regulate my hormones so that doesn't contribute. Most of mine are stress, sleep-deprivation, or dehydration-related. I take Tylenol 1's which often nip them in the bud, or Imitrex... but I seem to be getting more bounce-backs with Imitrex lately. And depending on the migraine, Imitrex can make them worse. I have a med review coming up with my GP, so we'll see. Sometimes taking Flexeril (muscle relaxer) with Phenergan (for nausea) helps as well.

And then, sometimes I just pack my head in ice at bedtime. But I don't have the luxury of giving in to them, so I suck it up and make due.

Been to the neurologist, blah blah blah.... they last anywhere from 3-5 days and I get them once every 3 mos or so....

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

What about trying Botox? They have had great results using it for Migraines. And it is usually covered by a medical plan when it is being used for a medical purpose, not cosmetic.

I get migraines maybe once or twice a month. If I don’t take meds, they go on for days, one-sided, pounding horrors that make me incredibly nauseas and unable to function. Over the counter Tylenol for migraines usually do the trick. The important thing is quickly gulping down a pill or two at the first hint of slight pain! I always have meds on my person at all times, just in case.

I get one almost every month (hormones)... usually advil blunts the pain if I start taking it as soon as it starts, and keep taking it every six hours until the migraine is COMPLETELY gone. If I stop too soon the stupid thing rebounds... last time I had one I spent about half an hour in the shower with the heat turned up as high as I could handle, letting the spray massage the back of my neck, then when I got out I rugged up so I wouldn't get chilled and DH soaked a handtowel in hot water and put it on my forehead. I usually use an icepack to try and freeze the pain out, but the hotpack seemed to work better.

DeadPoolX,

I used to when I was a child, but grew out of it in my 20s. Inherited from my mother and passed on to my oldest daughter.

I would lie quietly in a dark room with hot, damp cloths on my forehead, changed every few minutes to keep them good and hot (requires an assistant). And loads of aspirin.

Deep tissue, trigger point massage therapy, ( I am a massage therapist ), especially on shoulders , neck and occipital ridge, chiropractic adjustments, Excedrin Migrane.

Low light, quiet room. Lots of water.

I get migraines. I use Excedrin for Migraines and the stuff is awesome!

My wife gets them. Maybe it has something to do with being a student and stressing out over classes, deadlines, presentations etc... :P etc....as she seems to get more of them during her studies and when deadlines approach.

But I have an idea of what you might be going through from seeing what she has to deal with. And at times, she can get them bad enough that she gets nausea etc........and can even "pop her cookies" every once in a while.

As others have said...you can try the Exedrine Migraine, or better yet, the Advil Maigraine which you can find at places like Walmart and Walgreens etc.

Other than that, it's just something that she has to wait out. Wish I could do more for her . I do rub her temples and whatever else I can do to help. But, usually, it's just time.......and getting her relaxed .........where she can rest until it's gone.

I used to get severe migraines. They'd come on by a big 'hole' in my vision that would be just an empty spot I couldn't see. Then I'd get the nausea where I couldn't eat or drink anything or I'd throw up - even spit in the garbage can so I didn't have to swallow my own saliva. Then would be the headache in massive force. Nothing helped but time. I'd go into a dark room and just sleep. When I awoke the headache was always still there but less and gradually faded away after a day or so. I still get them but they're minor now. Spotty vision, mild nausea, and then a very mild headache. Glad to say they're getting less frequent and severe as life goes on. One of the few good things of getting older! ;):P

In between the time of my accident to the time of my surgery, I had a 6 month migrane that was so bad, I literally thought about killing myself. Not in the 'I'm going to do it for real' vein, but if I didn't leave behind my family, and there was no cure for me, and it wasn't against my religious beliefs, I seriously would have done it. obviously those are a lot of 'ifs' but I'm not one to even think crazy things like that, but the pain was that unbearable.

I tried many things which did not work at the time...for there was obviously a bigger problem that was causing it, but now when I get the occassional migrane, I pull out the old bag of tricks. I read a lot about accupressure, and for me, putting pressure with my fingers right below my eyebrows...in the upper ridge of the eye socket... really helps. Also pressure between my thumb and pointer too. Acupuncture helps when the problem is chronic.

But the rest: cold pack on the head, eye mask on to be in complete darkness and quiet. And when it's really bad for me..I swear this works...I put a king sized pillow over my eyes and pull down on each side next to my head. I don't know why it works, but it does.

I used to get them really bad, fairly frequently, from the time I was about 9 months old til just a few years ago. Now I get something else entirely, which we haven't figured out what makes it go away yet.

As for the migraines, Excedrine Migraine works ok, but watch you don't take too much and get too much caffien and get the shakes. Heat on my head and back of my neck worked for me too, in a dark room, with no sound. I'm very sound and light sensitive even when I don't have a headache, its magnified 1000 fold when I do!

Usually they went right away as soon as I'd throw up, and sometimes I'd just lie in the bathroom waiting for it. I'd be in so much pain I couldn't move. My Mum even said she could see my temples throbbing from across the room.

Now the headaches I get nothing touches 'em. I've taken every off the shelf headache pill you can imagine, and right up to Vicodin, doesn't get rid of them. And now I don't even get the nausea and vomiting to end it. It just keeps on going. I just take enough Naproxin or aceteminophen to dull it enough to function and so I don't overdose or kill my kidneys and liver.

Maybe someday someone will invent something to eliminate headaches of all sorts.

*sigh*
