Hello everyone!

I had my interview today:

My husband and I arrived around 20 minutes early and the officer called me in around 10:30. He swore me in and started asking me questions from my application, my SSO number, birth date, husband, etc.

Then he gave me one sentence to read and one sentence to write down.

He moved on to ask me the following civics questions:

1. Who is in charge of the Executive Branch?

2. If the President can no longer serve, who takes his place?

3. When is the last day you can file your income taxes?

4. Who was President during WW1?

I can't remember the other 2! He stopped after asking 6 questions because that's all I need to pass. He then, had me sign a couple of papers and provided me with a paper that says I passed and to wait for a letter for my oath ceremony.

I was in and out in around 10 minutes. Good luck to everyone!

Hello All,

I had my interview yesterday and I passed! Below are the details of my experience:

My wife and I went to the downtown LA field office together. My appointment was for 10:50am and hers was for 11:35am. We both arrived a little after 10am. The security guard was very friendly. He told us we were way too early and normally he would tell us to come back in 30 minutes but instead he said he would see what he can do. He told us to have a seat in the waiting room. There were about 15-20 people in the waiting room but my guess is there were maybe only 5-10 applicants as most people had family/friends they brought with them.

I was called in about 10:20. The IO led me to her office and conducted the oath. She was very nice and friendly. After the oath, she asked me to take a seat and proceeded to let me know how the flow of the interview was going to go. She said we would take the tests to get that out of the way then we would go through my n-400 form in detail.

For the Reading test, she handed me a piece of paper that had 3 sentences on it. She asked me to read the first sentence which I did. She handed me a piece of paper that had 3 blanks on it. She told me to write "We pay taxes" on the first line, which I did. We proceeded to the civics questions. The questions were (not in this order):

- What is freedom of religion?

- What is the ocean on the East coast?

- When are men required to register for Selective Service?

- How many senators are there?

- Name one state that borders Canada?

- When was the constitution written?

I answered all of these questions correctly so she stopped and informed me that I passed all the tests. She then proceeded to go through my N-400. She went through each question without exception. I made a couple of corrections to my form. The first was a correction to the travel dates. They were mostly one day off as i picked up the wrong dates in my passport. She said, no big deal. She got the printouts that I brought and labeled them as exhibits. The other correction was for answering no to question #23. I provided details of my traffic violations and that they were paid for and dismissed. She also added those as exhibits. After going through the form, she had me sign the form. She printed out a form which had my personal details. She told me to review for accuracy as this would be used to finalize my naturalization certificate. I went ahead and reviewed then signed. At that point, I was a bit more relaxed and noticed a lot of fan paraphernalia of our local sports team and we started talking about that for about 10 minutes!

I asked if I could be included in the oath ceremony for the next day (today) but she told me that the slate was already full but that I would be included in the next one. Apparently, both sessions for oath taking ceremonies today in LA will have 5000 participants each session. So with that she handed me a form saying that I was recommended for approval and that I should receive my oath date in the mail. She led me out back to the waiting room. I was done at 10:50 which was my original appointment time. My wife came out about 5-10 minutes later. So she was done about 30 minutes BEFORE her original appointment time.

A couple of other things I learned while talking to the IO:

- I complemented her about the LA field office not being backed up. She mentioned that there were 4 field offices that serve LA. 2 in downtown, 1 in San Bernardino and another in Santa Ana. For being the 2nd largest region (NYC is the first), they are well staffed to handle all the applications.

- She said they experience a surge in applications around April maybe due to tax refunds the people receive during that time. But also a lull in applications around December.

- I compared notes with my wife after our interview and she was asked the exact same civic questions that I had been asked. So maybe they use the same questions for a day.

So thats it! I only have the oath ceremony to look forward to. Hopefully nothing major happens between now and then to jeopardize my process. Good luck to everyone still waiting for an interview and thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences here that helped me a lot in my own application process.

cheers!

Congratulations and thank you for the excellent summary.

Very interesting information about the rise in applications in April and the drop in December.

Several people noted a slowdown last summer and things seem to have picked up again for Jan and Feb 2015 applicants compared to May and June 2014 applicants.

So my visa journey has finally come to an end and I am now proudly an American. This is one of the longest, most enduring, and most memorable journeys in my life. I thank you all for your advice, companies, and support over the years. Here is my oath experience.

My appointment was at 12:30 and I got there around 11:50 and the line was already long that went way outside the building but it was surprisingly fast, I was in my seat by 12:20. Anyway, I got in line, waited, and finally got to the door, picked out my letter and my GC, the woman at the door checked it and marked my seat row number (#0) and sent me in. I went in and they gave me a big envelope which had Declaration of Independence and all the Oaths as well as national anthem printouts. It also had a letter from Obama congratulating new citizen and a paper cover for you to put your certificate in; and of course a small American flag. So I received the envelope, stepped in the hall, there was another guy showing me to my seat row and at the seat row, there was another woman checking and collecting my letter as well as my GC's. Then, I got in my seat, waited and waited... Finally by 12:50-ish, the ceremony started.

A guy from Santa Clara County office started by congratulating us on becoming citizens then he went through the voting rights and how to register. After that, his instructions were repeated in four different languages. After it was done, another guy from USCIS took the stage, he then talked about America and the freedom. To be honest, I did not remember this part that well. Anyway, skipping this, after this guy another guy started singing national anthem. Now there were two people from DoT passport agency and Social Security office, they went through the processes of applying for passport and updating your SSN. Then the USCIS district chief raised us and asked us to raise our right hand, then he proceeded with the oath of allegiance, and that was when we were all finally citizens! After this, another dude who was there to be naturalized walked on the stage and read the pledge of allegiance (not sure how he was selected). After all was done, we sat back down and watch several clips including Obama welcoming new citizens. Finally, they handed out voter registration form and the long-awaited naturalization certificate. They asked us to double check the information because once we walked out it would be difficult to change any of the information. After receiving my certificate, I signed it, put in the envelope which had my passport application and handed it to one of passport ladies there. I was out of there as an American by 1:50.

The whole ceremony took about an hour from beginning to the end. It was for sure one of the greatest memories in my life. I wish all who are waiting a speedy and smooth experience.

Thanks! You are next in the Phoenix group. There are many offices serving LA area so I hope you won't have to wait long for your oath.

Congrats huy_le!! Thanks for sharing your experience.
