I'd get a M-16 for the house if I could. It's the only rifle I'm comfortable shooting, but the missus has made her point very clear so that's out. I think anyone should be able to defend themselves, it's the notion that you HAVE to be armed all the damn time. If you're home and typing posts with a gun strapped to your person or talking about taking them to the bathroom, I think there might be an issue.

Teddy has said this a few times, just like me, John, Penny and the rest of the "lib" brigade.

I wouldn't put yourself in with the "lib brigade" if I were you. Some take their stance on guns MUCH farther than you obviously do. (To the point of ridiculosity in some cases)

I don't see an M-16 as a good home defense weapon, but that is just me. Unless you shorten the stock and cut the barrel down to about 10", which requires a special permit (as does a suppressor). Deer CAN be killed with a 5.56/.223 but it's not an optimum round. Varmint shooting, coyotes, cats, etc., maybe. But the weapon is designed to wound, not kill, at least with military ball ammo.

A shotgun is your best home defense weapon from the standpoint of lack of required accuracy. And truth be told, just racking the slide has probably deterred many home invasions, which is nice because you don't have to live with killing someone. A compact .40 or .45 would be my next choice. Easy to handle, but does require some training and practice to shoot well.

Careful Dave, I once claimed that I thought a lot of people liked assault weapons because they look intimidating and was called a scaredy cat. You should be ok though, you're in the club.

LOL, the only club I am in is the old white guy with a foreign wife club, it seems. :)

It's my opinion, not saying it is right, but that is what makes an assault weapon... its looks. IMHO, any weapon pointed at me, from a slingshot to a crossbow to a full-auto M240B is an assault weapon... because I am being assaulted. I know you know the deal, but here's some pics to illustrate public fear over "assault" weapons:

Exact same lethality and rate of fire.

I agree with you that the main attraction to assault weapons are their looks for most people. Marvin stated a different reason in an earlier post, it's what he's accustomed to using due to his military background.

There are quite a few differences between the guns in the two pics you posted. The first one has a pistol grip and telescoping stock, both will aid in speed and accuracy of firing. And no matter how you slice it, the first pic is a more intimidating looking weapon than the second. The second pic of the musket does not appear to be an assualt weapon at all, it doesn't appear to be a semi-auto. I could be wrong.

Right now I'm in the group with John and Janelle. It's either that name that John came up with or the Leftinistas. I'm working on something more catchy.

I just like it because it's what I know. A handgun is more than I need in that case. I know the shotgun works since the sound of racking the slide is scary as hell for an intruder to hear.

In all fairness, equant is just another word in the dictionary. I joined the leftinistas when I chose to be left-handed.

You'd make a great CBO for the Equant posse. Janelle is the CAO.

We need a better term for the team. I'm working on it.

And thanks for the nomination. I'll do my best to represent our group.

I think John coined the phrase, or NB. Like I said, I'm working on something better. Don't test me.

Not me... I tend to be unique and more creative.

Leftinista was coined way back in 2005... It was appropriated. It's not a VJ creation.

Please explain in more detail on how a telescoping stock will aid in speed .. what ever that means. and accuracy .. If that is the case that is the gun i want in a defensive situation . Oh I know you can "spray " from the hip ... ... I doubt you have fired either one , But go ahead any way .

.. This person has not a clue .
