(CNN) -- The U.S. Supreme Court said Saturday that Texas' controversial voter identification law can go into effect for now -- a decision that comes two days before early voting in the state.

The justices declined to lift a federal appeals court's decision to allow the law to be in effect for November elections. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote a nearly seven-page dissent, joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

The voter ID law requires that voters present photographic identification at the polls. Proponents say it will help prevent voter fraud.

A judge in Texas struck down the law earlier this year, agreeing with critics that minority voters would be disenfranchised and ruling that it therefore couldn't be implemented.

But the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay on Wednesday, saying that the law couldn't be stopped so close to an election.

"The Supreme Court has repeatedly instructed courts to consider the importance of preserving the status quo on the eve of an election," the 5th Circuit court ruled.

The first day of early voting in Texas is Monday.

Great. They finally found a solution to a non-existent problem. Only in America...

They're being pro-active. I applaud them for taking steps to prevent a future problem. Your guy in the white house should try it once.

I forgot, he is being proactive. He's doing his part to make sure there's as many future Democrat voters as possible, by welcoming illegal aliens to the U.S.

Of course, we should spend millions on preventing things that are not likely to happen. Good use of tax dollars and time.

It costs millions to check someone's ID?

Party line? I don't belong to any political organization. As to spending money on things we don't need, yeah, I am not on favor of it, but apparently some are. Strange, if small gov is your thing. I'm in favor of having things that work and provide a solution to a problem, not just a reaction to panic.

You made a claim that this will cost millions. Do you have any evidence of this, or are you making things up again?

No, I made a claim that I am not in favor of spending millions on non issues, not that this non issue solution would cost millions.

Maybe you should start a separate thread about non issues that costs millions. Seems your comment was not related to the OP. Maybe you were confused about the thread where you were posting. It's happened to me.
