Hey guys, random question, does anybody have any experience with requesting a last name change with the social security administration? My wife wants to change her last name but from what I've seen they are requesting certified copies of our marriage certificate and stuff. A copy from the NYC City Clerk costs 15 dollars and then again I am not sure if they need certified copies of her passport too or what?

Could I just go there in person and show them our original marriage certificate? :S

This is the social security administration's instructions (on type of card click on corrected): http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm

from what I know you have to appear in person anyways and bring with you the marriage certificate,passport and the EAD with the new name on it, if she already has a SSN.

"Important

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. We also cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.

Get a certified copy of a document showing a birth, marriage or divorce that took place in the U.S.

Name change

If you need to change your name on your Social Security card, you must show us a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change. Documents Social Security may accept to prove a legal name change include:

  • Marriage document;
  • Divorce decree;
  • Court order approving the name change; or
  • Current U.S. immigration document.

If the document you provide as evidence of a legal name change does not give us enough information to identify you in our records or if you changed your name more than two years ago (four years ago if you are under 18 years of age), you must show us an identity document in your prior name (as shown in our records). We will accept an identity document in your old name that has expired.

If you do not have an identity document in your prior name, we may accept an unexpired identity document in your new name, as long as we can properly establish your identity in our records."

so this states that either originals or certified copies are accepted.

random question:

Everybody has health insurance already?????

What kind of company you are with and are you with your husband/wife or by yourself???

And if you don't mind... Around how much you pay?????

I don't have one yet for economic reasons. My husband is self employee and he is with Humana but I know I will have to get one by myself or wait until I have a job.

With Obamacare it's an obligation to have health insurance or at the end of the year you have to pay a fine.

I opened a post the other day asking if anyone knew when does it starts counting ( about the fine ) and a girl answered with EAD.

I'll leave the link here: http://www.visajourn...tart/?p=7272234

If any of you have any more info about it feel free to share I'm very lost about this Health sistem.

( my husband left today because his job he will be out the country for a month I have all my in laws near to ask things but I know they are busy to be asking 24/7 so I'm kind of dealing and trying to learn about everything by my own while my husband is gone )

I have health insurance through my husbands job. It costs him about 100 every two weeks. There are places you can get insurance but not sure about the price. There is also a visitor insurance you can use until you have your green card but it's not very good. You may have to go to an outside company. You won't need it until you have a green card as far as I know. Also when you get your EAD and you find work looking for someone who offers benefits is an option. I know its not that easy.

Thanks for writing!!! Someone mentioned about the visitor insurance in some random post but I when I looked at it it didn't convince me... Like you said doesn't seem very good.

If I can wait until I have the GC I will relax then. Since my lifetime style is not very extrem, I'm mostly all day inside the house haha so not much can happen to me!

But I now I will need it sooner or later because I will run out of birth control pills.....

In Spain you don't need prescription you literally walk in the pharmacy and get them from a shelf are and $15 here already asked in several places and they won't sell them without prescription and going to a doctor without insurance is pricey. So I'm collecting info in case the EAD takes too long :(

Thanks!

If you're out of birth control, find a planned parenthood and explain your situation, they should be able to help you on a sliding scale. I used them for birth control during the brief period I was uninsured and they were very helpful.

Once you are employed, many employers offer insurance through their company. If not, you should be able to get on your husband's insurance. There's always the option to also buy, but through your employer is easiest.
