Oath Ceremony Information

Hello all! My wife just took her test this past Monday and has her ceremony this friday. Horrible part is my in laws bought their tickets to be here next month assuming it took 5 mo to process well it went faster. We don't want to change the date because I've heard stories of people waiting 6 months for a new date. So we figure there's a reason why this processed so quickly. My question is how many guests is my wife allowed to bring to the ceremony. It doesn't list on her appointment letter just says dress well and be there promptly. I've never been to a oath ceremony and don't even know what do I wear? Dress pants and nice shirt or full out suite and tie? Thanks everyone

Also I wanted to know how come they will officially recognized her country of birth but not citizens ship during the ceremony. This is a big deal to her and she's proud of her country Ecuador (and america) and has no ties to her birth country of France but at the ceremony they're going to announce France and she will have to rise.

1) Use common sense when deciding what to wear. From my very limited familiarity with Naturalisation Oath Ceremonies, a "full out suit and tie" would be somewhat of an overkill. I suppose a good rule of thumb is to assume that whatever was worn at the naturalisation interview (and in which you would feel comfortable being photographed) is appropriate for the Oath Ceremony. This standard varies from person to person.

2) Guests are usually permitted to attend Naturalisation Oath Ceremonies, but this varies from one local field office to the next. Best advice is to enquire with your local field office, read up on the local field office profile on the USCIS website, or perform a simple Google search.

3) The information in your follow-up post sounds a little odd to me. I have never heard the term "Country of Birth" referenced in respect to about-to-be naturalised citizens at Naturalisation Oath Ceremonies. The language seems always to be "Country of Origin." Could you indicate what's led you to believe otherwise. You very well could be right, and in that case, I'd be quite surprised.

Even her green card says france. Now as per the cloths I never went to the oath test I'm a born usc. I normally wear holly jeans and a white t shirt... but my wife wants me to look decent so i didn't know if I should buy a suite or just nice pants and a nice shirt. I just wanted to dress nice because this event is important to my wife and my self.

My husband wore slacks and a nice black sweater. So nice slacks and a nice shirt should do it.

If you're so worried about what to wear you can youtube "Citizenship Oath Ceremony 2014" and you will find a lot of videos showing what the oath ceremony is like and what people usually wear. CLICK HERE and you can watch one of the most recent videos I found on youtube. As you can see on the video, not everyone is wearing Suits and ties, I see people in Jeans and shirts. I personally dont plan on wearing fancy clothes, just anything I feel confortable in.

Apples: What you said was that your wife was concerned about being asked to rise at the Naturalisation Oath Ceremony and identify with France (her country of birth) while her country or origin, the one for which she feels more cultural affinity, is Ecuador. The Master of Ceremonies does not identify people by their countries of birth, that is false.

Oranges:The link you attached is not a procedural document about Naturalisation Oath Ceremonies (which was your cause for concern), but unrelated data-gathering for purposes of internal demographics studies within the USCIS and not intended for broad external consumption.

It really is irrelevant what the citizen-to-be's guest wears and it doesn't affect anything if even the citizen-to-be wears jeans. Wear what you're comfortable in. If you'd like to have nice pictures together then wear nice clothes.

The whole stand up when they mention your country thing is just a cutesy move - nobody really cares where you're from..... its just a nice little representation to show the variety of countries represented that day.

I did a simple google search for "Country of Origin" and was pointed to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/country+of+origin

Noun 1. country of origin - the country where you were born

fatherland, homeland, mother country, motherland, native land

country, land, state - the territory occupied by a nation; "he returned to the land of his birth"; "he visited several European countries"

old country - the country of origin of an immigrant

This is a decision you want to make; most people I saw yesterday in Los Angeles were somewhat dressed up and the atmosphere was excited and happy. All the guests for the applicants were there to cheer and make sure that the applicant's day was special. Some people were dressed in jeans but most were in dressier clothes and it's just what you feel makes for a truly special day, because that's what it is. People usually dress up for special occasions and I think it's appropriate to so so. Your wife is becoming a citizen of United States so make it special for both of you! A little effort makes for big rewards and shows that you care.

I live in Miami so will probably attend my Naturalisation Oath Ceremony in turquoise flip-flops, beach shorts and a matching wife-beater, but hey, everyone's different. If you really can't make up your mind (this is, after all, a very complicated decision), you can always follow my lead. Just think how much more relaxed you'd feel in those comfortable clothes.

I envy you! I would cut off my right arm to live in Miami! I am all set on the clothes to wear now. Just going to get some dress pants and a nice button up.
