Hello,

I had all my documents/copies (birth certificate, passport, letter of intent) notarised in London just to be on the safe side. I would really stick to what the RFE Letter requires and not gamble on what others have managed to get away with (some adjudicators seem to be more pernickety than others).

We also had an RFE (for a US document) so I know how stressful it can be and you do not want to take any chances.

I agree that it may be confusing especially as you can get a document notarised for 5$ in the US but it costs at least 10 times this amount in the UK (different regulation). Also you can check on the US embassy in London as I think they can notarise your documents directly (I am not sure how much they charge for it though).

Good luck and keep us posted!

Anne

I am thinking the OP has not seen the RFE. I think maybe the RFE did not go to the OP, but the lawyer. And the lawyer is saying it needs to be notarized without showing the actual RFE to the OP.

There is no need to spend $100-$150 to verify a signature. A notary in the US is different from a notary in the UK, as people have explained.

Here is a sample RFE for letter of intent. Does it say notary anywhere? No.

Here are the instructions from the I129F. Does it say notary? No.

Don't overthink this for the OPs sake. She's a nervous wreck anyway. She said the RFE states it needs to be notarized, which is probably because it wasn't included in the original package. One RFE already will delay the process and while you may want to debate that the letter of intent doesn't require a notarization in the original package, it's best to give it to them. It's not like the beneficiary has to carve a canoe out of a tree and paddle it across the Atlantic. I suggest he go to the US consulate or US embassy to get his signature witnessed, stamped and certified. In truth however, any bank can witness and stamp the letter. Just get it done and get it on the way.

Yes, but I think the OP is being lied to by the lawyer because it isn't required. Unfortunately she doesn't follow the help she asks for, so many good and knowledgeable people have jumped ship on providing advice.

I would ask her to upload the RFE for all to see, but I am not holding my breath.

She already wasted money on a lawyer who sent an incomplete package and now the lawyer wants her to waste over £100 more to cover his butt and make it seem like her fault when it was the lawyer's?

I agree that she's so full of anxiety that she's been ignoring a lot of good advice. Her lawyer has already proved his incompetence as he didn't include the letter of intent in the package. If I were her, I would report him to the bar association in her state. That is gross incompetence.

My father in law is angry at us for not using a lawyer for our case. I reckon he should be feeling relieved!

ROC from CR-1 visa (Green Card expiration date was Nov 24th 2016)

Link to the evidence I submitted. Be sure to send evidence spanning your entire marriage (especially for K-1) or as far back as you can. Just one or two bank statements will not cut it. I primarily focused on the two years of living here since I came in on a CR-1. If you don't have the fundamentals (i.e. joint accounts/policies), you can explain why in the covering letter. E.g. "While we do not have joint utilities, we both contribute to them from our joint bank account".

September 26th 2016: I-751 package sent to CSC

September 28th 2016: Package delivered

October 3rd 2016: NOA1 received with receipt date of 09/28/16
November 3rd 2016: Biometrics received with appointment date of 11/14/16.
November 14th 2016: Attended biometrics appointment
October 30th 2017: Infopass appointment to get I-551 stamp
February 26th 2018: I-751 case number (aka the NOA1 receipt number) becomes trackable
March 14th 2018: Submitted service request due to being outside of processing time.

March 15th 2018: ROC approved. 535 days (1 year, 5 months and 17 days)

March 29th 2018: Card being produced

April 4th 2018: Card mailed out

April 6th 2018: Card in hand. Has incorrect "resident since" date. Submitted service request on I-751 case (typographical error on permanent resident card) and an I-90 online.

April 2018 - August 7th 2018: Tons of service requests, emails and now senator involvement to get my corrected green card back because what the heck, USCIS. Also some time in May I sent a letter to Potomac telling them I want to withdraw my I-90 since CSC were handling it.

August 8th 2018: Card in production thanks to the direct involvement of Senator Sherrod Brown's team

August 13th 2018: Card mailed

August 15th 2018: Card in hand with correct date. :joy:

October 31st 2018: Potomac sends out a notice stating they have closed out my I-90 per my request. Yay for no duplicate card drama.
