Birth Certificate copy for K-Visa

Hey guys, me again! Just a quick question involving birth certificate copies that I did not see the answer to anywhere..

When filing the I-129f form, I know you're supposed to include a copy of your birth certificate. I was just wondering if a regular copy would do, or if it needs to be a certified copy with the official seal? I know you are also supposed to make copies of everything and hold onto them.. does the second copy need the seal as well? I'd hate to send the wrong version either way.

Seems as though the instructions are always vague and there aren't many places with answers. This website is the best thing I've ever come across!! Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the forum.

I followed the K-1 Visa Guide, including the instruction about the birth certificate:

Copy of the Birth certificate (front and back) for the US Citizen or a copy of ALL pages of the US Citizen's passport issued with a validity of at least 5 years or a copy of the US Citizen's naturalization certificate (front and back). This is used to establish citizenship.

I was certain to bring the original for comparison viewing at the consulate interview and the AOS interview.

A regular copy is fine for your petition. Just make sure you bring originals of all your documents to the interview in case they ask to see it.

Photocopies are fine for USCIS, but NVC and possibly the embassy too may need an original certified copy.

If you were born in England or Wales they are easily obtained from the General Register Office: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I can tell you what we did. When my wife got her birth certificate in the Philippines I had her pay for 7 originals. We had all we needed and sent originals to everyone just in case. No RFE's.

Nothing is sent to the NVC for a K-1 applicant, so NVC won't need one.

The foreign fiance(e)'s birth certificate is not needed with the I-129F petition. Only the USC petitioner needs to prove their citizenship. This can be done with a copy of their US birth certificate, naturalization or all pages of their US passport. Just make copies of whatever document you are going to use. The foreign fiance(e) will provide their birth certificate later for the K-1 visa interview.

It would be clearer If people said photocopy...as in, you may send a photocopy of the certified copy of your US birth certificate.
