I can't wait for that to happen to me! After all the gathering of documents and checking and double checking - putting the envelope in the mail was a complete non-event! I don't know what I was expecting but it was somehow odd to just drop the envelope in the mailbox and that was that... :)

As a side note though, I did not put a cover letter in my envelope. I hope it's not the "one thing missing" that will screw me over. I paperclipped the N400 itself, then I paperclipped my pictures and divorce decree copy in the back of it and my check and g1145 in the front.

Just wondering, after all that work and with so much riding on citizenship - or at least wanting to get it done without a hitch - why would you not take an hour to compose and polish a really good cover letter? I don't get it.

You know, there's no need to get snippy - it just didn't occur to me!!!! So it's just one of those things that happens in life I guess. Maybe you've never missed any steps to anything but some of us apparently aren't perfect. Hopefully they'll be able to figure out the application without the cover letter. There's nothing I can do about it now so I'll just wait.

That was 'snippy'? Let me guess, you were raised by nuns? Or monks?

Honestly, there's not even a cross word in what I wrote. I was just puzzled as to why, based in what you wrote, you dropped it on a mailbox without a cover letter. You never mentioned that you forgot until just now.

I thought it was a given all correspondence went with a cover letter enumerating the contents. Shrug.

I don't think it will make a difference. Was just wondering why you hadn't bothered. Perhaps I ought to have chucked you under the chin to offset the 'snippyness'.

Wow, "chucked you under the chin"... I thought this forum was here for all of us to offer helpful advice and give friendly support to all of us in a shared forum.. Most of us are excited, nervous, anxious etc. so a few kind words every now and then are something we look forward to.

But anyway, happy visa journey to you and your wife and kids, as well as to all of us other November filers!!! :)

Same to you. I was trying. Perhaps you misunderstand my idiom:

To chuck: to pat affectionately, esp. under the chin

I did not put a cover letter in my envelope.

I also did not enclose a cover letter. That is nothing, seriously.

Thank you VBB and Jewel4life. I was trying to remember if I put a cover letter on any of my original Visa/GC applications and honestly, I can't remember... It's been over 20 years..

Settle down peeps! We're here to help each other.

I just realized that I did screw up, I didn't include Form G-1145. For some reason when I read the instructions I thought it meant something else :/

As far as I can see, this means I have to wait to get the actual notice in the mail, right?

I can't wait for that to happen to me! After all the gathering of documents and checking and double checking - putting the envelope in the mail was a complete non-event! I don't know what I was expecting but it was somehow odd to just drop the envelope in the mailbox and that was that... smile.png

As a side note though, I did not put a cover letter in my envelope. I hope it's not the "one thing missing" that will screw me over. I paperclipped the N400 itself, then I paperclipped my pictures and divorce decree copy in the back of it and my check and g1145 in the front.

Yes, I had that moment too, where i was like "Ok.. so when I drop this envelope through the slot, I'm an American citizen." You build this whole romance about it, and then it comes down to sticking an envelope in a slot THUMP. And that's it. No trumpets, no confetti falling from the ceiling, no Champagne, just a dull THUMP as the envelope falls to the bottom of the bin, and now you've sort of become a different person - an American. lol

As for the coverletter - don't worry. The person opening your letter knows what an N-400 is. They've seen one or two before ;). And if I may be so presumptuous; most of us have been through the ringer to get where we are (K-1, K-3, Married, Work authorization, green card, lifting conditions, etc) the road up to here has been, in large part, a gauntlet of trying to prove your love, prove your relationship, prove you marriage. I see a lot of us are still traumatized by this, and still think that the N-400 is about proving your marriage still. Well, it's not. You don't need to send pictures, love letters, and a pile of "evidence". Just send what the instructions ask for. I think this process is going to be a lot easier than all the previous steps. We should all relax, and take a deep breath, and enjoy what's left of the ride. And we should be proud that we made it this far, and that we found love, and that we made it work, and that we ventured and risked, and gained. And that we now get to participate as equal citizens in one of the greatest nations on Earth.
