Doesn't 'slip' refer to something that happens when you have traction, which you don't have any of when skating on ice?

I've always understood it doesn't matter what you are driving when you hit ice. Front wheel, rear wheel, all wheel or high altitude.

That is correct, though contrary to most people's belief.

You turn into the direction of the swerve/spin.

Easier said than done and almost instinctively impossible to do.

I don't recall many details but I do recall having the conscious thought to turn into the skid. It did feel weird, but I did it.

I made it home okay. Very cautiously, but okay. They're forecasting freezing rain for Thursday. *gulp*

edit: And thanks for all the good wishes. I'm very happy this turned out as well as it did. Only my nerves affected so far. Having a Bailey's now. (You knew I would... :P )

Glad to hear you made it through that ok.

By the way, rebeccajo is correct, irrespective of the traction capabilities of your vehicle: 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, limited slip differential or posi-traction, it all amounts to driving skill. Unless you have been trained in counter sliding or skidding, you are at the mercy of lateral movement.

Take a Bob Bondurant course or it's equivalent, well worth the money and a heck of a lot of fun!!

I'm so glad you're alright! I had two accidents when I was younger (18,20 or so) and they were both in the winter...I hate driving in it..pretty bad considering where we live! Anyway, a 51 year old prosecuter was just killed when he hit a patch of black ice a few days ago....it's dangerous stuff! They say they don't suspect alcohol or anything..just happened. Again, GLAD you're fine!!!! (F) M.

Glad your ok :D

We drove on plenty of ice covered roads at home.

You just have to be very careful :)

Growing up with snow and ice you get used to driving in it.

Plus never slam on your breaks when you hit ice, thats when you really go spinning.

Yeah, the big part of the problem is, growing up in Vancouver BC, there's not much practice. When it snows there, the city shuts down. So no extended amount of driving on ice.

Ah well, live and learn, right? Emphasis on live.

I'm already starting to get sore from clenching muscles. The Bailey's helped that. :D
