Does anybody know how long you have to wait before going to get your ssn after arriving in America ? I called them yesterday and was told I need to nave residency before I can get one but I was under the impression on a K1 you did not have to wait that long ??? Sorry no time line but the account me fiancee and I were using will not let us on even doing the forgot password thing

You should be able to get a SSN after 2-3 weeks. That is the time it takes for the USCIS d-base to update SS.

I would recommend you pay a visit to the SSO in person to apply, bring your passport and a copy of your I-94.

Having said that you will not need your SSN until such time when you receive your EAD so you may consider waiting a little while before dealing with the SSO.

You won't just get it. You need to go to SSA office, fill out the form and apply.

After about 10 business days of arriving in the USA your fiancée can complete the SS-5 take it to SSA and get her SSN, it will take about 2 weeks after that for the card to arrive in the mail. This must be completed at least 2 weeks before the expiration date on the I-94.

My wife waited about a month, until we were married, then got her card in her married name.

Why? It's #######. You're giving false hope to folk , leading them to believe that what worked for your wife will work for all.

It's not that way, at all.

You got exceptionally lucky. USUALLY, when folk apply in the married name (K-1 visa holders) within the 90 days on the I-94, a properly trained SSA staffer will send the stuff out for DHS Verification.

That was skipped, with you and yer wife.

I hope you realize how exceptionally lucky you were. I also hope that you stop repeating 'your story' as the gospel.

It's not the gospel. It doesn't work (mostly). You and your wife were exceptionally lucky, IMO bullying a SSA staffer to make it happen without the SAVE db lookup.

I ask you stop repeating your story, as it's not the way it's supposed to be done at any SSA office.

I have an ex-wife that was a nagging *B* ... you remind me of her. No facts but lots of mouth.

So me facts.... LINKS ... you know something from SSA stating a newly married K-1 can not apply for their SSN in their married name until after they have their GC and that to do so before getting their GC is foolhardy.

And then in your infinite wisdom... explain what information was the SSA personal pulling up on their computer when they "verified" information before authorizing issuance of the SSN for my wife.

And are you saying there is no "STUFF" sent out if a person applies for their SSN in the single name?
