Daniel,

You have to a bring a pair of those binoculars on a stick.

 Got this vision of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere up there in the box

I would think a good pair of field binocs would work as well or better. Camo even.

just looked up the local opera gig's web site. the only opera shows left for this season is Aida by Verdi and Carmen by Bizet.

Ooh! Good choices!

Here in Portland people show up in all sorts of dress, including jeans. I can't imagine Sacratomato is that much more sophisticated... heheheh

In the US, as opposed to in Europe where opera is much less of a "formal" thing ...

It depends where (people wear jeans to the Santa Fe opera, but a suit or tux is pretty much required at the Met in New York--and yes, the Santa Fe Opera is of more or less the same caliber as the Met). In general, I'd say a dress for women and a coat and tie (doesn't have to be a suit) for men. You'd be among the dressiest at some places and among the most casual at others, but you'd still not be totally out of place in either case.

And choose Carmen. I'm jealous. We wanted to see it at the Santa Fe Opera last year but the tickets sold out six months in advance.

Rule for all performances:

No strong cologne or perfume.

No cell phones or pages.

No big hair.

No leaning forward (the people behind you won't be able to see)

No leaning with your heads together a la lovebird style (same as above)

No unwrapping crinkly candy wrappers.

No humming or tapping along with the music.

No whispering.

No arriving late or leaving early.

I wouldn't wear jeans. Your wife probably wants to wear a pretty dress so you best dress to match her. Dressing up is half the fun. Also usually sub/super titles are projected above or next to the stage so people can follow the story.

Oh, I like to dress up!! But a tux isn't necessary - I do think a suit is nice!!

You know those 'Dummies' books? There's one called "Opera for Dummies" and its got a synopsis for any opera you're ever likely to attend. It also gives you a bit of background on the basic ways operas are written, explains the type of singers, how to behave, what to where - well basically anything any dummy needs to know.

And if you ever get the chance to see Tosca - don't miss that one! There's a piece in it called 'E Lucevan e Stelle' that is true romance music - clarinet solo and all!

I love opera -- Mozart and Verdi are favorites. Rigoletto for instance, is wonderful :) I'm not SUCH a big Puccini fan maself. Anyway, a tux is not required unless you're going to opening night or something. Put on a suit and tie and you will look fine.

And... have fun! I brought my husband to see Cosi fan Tutte while we were dating; he hated it and in retrospect it probably wasnt the best thing with which to introduce him to opera. I will get him to go with me again though ;)

wow! thanks guys! you guys are the bestests! great input. to me, the opera does have this stuffy exclusive aura about it. i picture a bunch of 60+ yr olds who are either rich or spend their entire pension on a show just to enjoy the 'finer' things in life. but sounds like all kinds of folks enjoy it. and i am always open for something new & cool. so, i will start looking for tickets! oooh maybe as in a pre-Christmas gift for Ana. :D:luv:

We went to see Phantom of the Opera in Manhattan a few months ago.

Wear what makes you feel confortable, just look at it like you are going out to a club with a dress code. No tie require

But i've seen folks with Jeans and a jacket

Enjoy the show

I walked by the entrance to an opera in Seattle and all the guys going in had their arms slightly bent at the elbow, with their wrists totally relaxed kind of moving their arm side to side.Like Steve said hold your opera glasses in the other hand and make sure you always are smiling!

No doz will probably keep the elbows away from the ribs

Have a great time Danny boy! Oh Daniel what ever you do dont ask what their sayin just cry alot.
