ok ok, don't laugh, but Ana wants me to take her to the opera. i don't mind. just that i've never gone and don't even know if they 'require' tuxedos to go in. any idears?

i mean i amthink about just driving by 20minutes before a showtime to see what the folks are a wearing.

i fel like freaking farm boy.

ummm don't know which opera. haven't a clue. i know it will be in Sacramnto CA. not exactly world class i imagine.

I agree. I doubt you'll feel out of place either way. Go with whatever makes you feel most comfortable, and have a great time.

My signature picture was taken the night David and I went to the Opera in Vienna. It was amazing.... very very beautiful. We were in the same room Mozart played for the first time listening to one of the most famous operas in the world..... I have no other words to explain... The ballet was just so beautiful.

No one there was wearing a tux because they don't really expect tourists to carry that stuff... plus, for some, opera is so normal that any jeans will do it.

The only thing I have to tell you is.. turn off your cell phone! One lady there was almost beaten to death because she had her cell phone on... and answered!!!!

Oh yes, it counts I was half joking about Puccini. I love it, but it makes me cry, so I probably wouldn't take my fiance there for his first opera; he might rethink some things J/k... You might try reading a synopsis of each before choosing, to see which story appeals to you more. You'd know the endings that way, though. But I follow an opera better when I know the story ahead of time since I have trouble following the written programs in the dark. I don't think you can go wrong with either of these. Opera's got this intimidating connotation sometimes -- dunno if it's the word itself or the fact that it gets stereotyped as stuffy and exclusive. But it's great stuff if you go prepared to relax, be yourself, and have fun.

Hi Daniel,

I majored in opera performance for my first 3 yrs of college! Definitely choose Carmen. It has really awesome music you probably know already, usually really cool costumes (i.e. stuff to look at) and a plot line that's not too hard to follow. IOW, it's the least likely opera in th world to fall asleep in.

I fell asleep in Verdi twice.

In the US, the rule is pretty much that if it's opening night, dress nicely. Otherwise, you don't need to dress that way at all. Just don't look particularly sloppy, and possibly choose pants other than jeans.
