Hello all,

My husband got in to the States on the 3rd of March. We had checked the DS230 form to automatically get the SSN automatically but it's been about 10 days already. He went to the social security office today and was advised he would have to wait for 21 days before he can apply for one. Anyone experienced this delay, or how long did any of you wait to get their social security number?

Any answers will be appreciated.

Thanks.

My husband arrived Feb 10th. We had also checked that box on the DS 230. We waited 3 three weeks like the Social Security website said to do. Never received anything. Applied in person on March 5th received card March 11th (card dated the date we applied in person). Hope this helps.

Aloha from Hawaii (Maui)

When I applied for my SSN, I was asked if I checked the SSN box on form DS230. I did, and NOTHING was in the system. I even double checked this when I got home from the SSA office. Sure enough, I DID check it.

SSN & DHS/USCIS are separate entities. They don't always communicate information, this is what I was told, from the agent I dealt with in Maui. Apparently this happens a lot, (in the state of Hawaii) ,VISA applicants check that box to get a SSN issued to them, and nothing is communicated from the USCIS/DHS office to the proper SSA office, who issues the SSN.

Anyways.... here's how my SS card timeline

POE: 2012-Nov. 1

SS : Applied Nov. 13 (received letter stating I applied for card...'may take up to 4 weeks)

MARRIED: Nov. 16

SS : Approved Nov. 20 (letter/receipt ... card will arrive in about 2 weeks)

Married certificate arrived ....

SSN: card arrived DEC 3

SS : Applied name change Dec 3 (received same letter as the first time I applied....)

SS : New card Approved Dec 5 (received same letter/receipt as before... card will arrive in about 2 weeks)

SSN: card arrived shortly after Dec 7

So really, in my experience, and every state is different, it took about a month.

Good luck :)

that was actually a smart SSA employee, as he/she/it looked up yer spouse in the SAVE database, and could not find any record of yer spouse.

Thank You all for the info.we were starting to think that the ss card was never going to arrive. I guess we still have to wait a little bit.

Though my Fiance has a job pending already. I hope he doesnt loose it due to this wait.
