you do NOT have to wait until he gets his greencard to get his SS number. Go to your local SS office 2 weeks after his arrival, he will need his passport with the visa stamp and one other form of ID.

Passport Timeline (Submitted at USPS, Standard Processing, Standard Delivery, Locator number: 51) & SSA Update & Naturalization Certificate Receipt

 

03/23/2022: Application for passport submitted at USPS facility under standard processing.

04/04/2022: Status changed to “The U.S. Department of State has received your application for your passport book on 04/04/2022. We're now reviewing your application and supporting documents...Your application locator number is 51*******.”

04/04/2022: Check for passport cashed.

05/03/2022: Status changed to "The U.S. Department of State approved your application for your passport book. We're now printing your passport book and preparing to give it to you. You should receive your passport book on or around 05/09/2022."

05/05/2022: Passport Received.

05/09/2022: SSA Citizenship Status Updated.

05/25/2022: Naturalization Certificate received in mail.

my husband received his 2 weeks later.. Did you use your passport to apply for the SS card? We were advised by an Immig. Attorney to wait until we received his GC. All this waiting is crazy!!!

you do NOT have to wait until he gets his greencard to get his SS number. Go to your local SS office 2 weeks after his arrival, he will need his passport with the visa stamp and one other form of ID. My husband had his SS number and card several weeks before his greencard arrived. I swear 99% of immigration attorneys are totally clueless and useless. headbonk.gif

I went to the SS Office and they were nice asked me for my passport and told Me they will send the SSN in 3 weeks, but what i'm waiting right now is for the welcome letter!!!! :/

It makes me laugh to think that someone in immigration is forced to send a "welcome letter".

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

I wish they had to individually lick the envelopes closed, but alas, they have tools for that now.
