Leave it to enterprising Americans to always find a loophole in the midst of ever-expanding government regulation.

While thousands of Seattle residents lined up for hours to trade their handguns, rifles and family heirlooms away in exchange for up to $200 in gift cards as part of the city’s latest gun buyback program, gun collectors who have seen prices for assault rifles and firearms accessories almost triple since November took advantage of a huge opportunity.

Police stood in awe as gun enthusiasts and collectors waved wads of cash for the guns being held by those standing in line for the buyback program.

Police officers in Seattle, Washington held their first gun buyback program in 20 years this weekend, underneath interstate 5, and soon found that private gun collectors were working the large crowd as little makeshift gun shows began dotting the parking lot and sidewalks.

Some even had “cash for guns” signs prominently displayed.

People that had arrived to trade in their weapons for $100 or $200 BuyBack gift cards($100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles, and $200 for assault weapons) soon realized that gun collectors were there and paying top dollar for collectible firearms. So, as the line for the chump cards got longer and longer people began to jump ship and head over to the dealers.

John Diaz, Seattles Police Chief, wasn’t pleased with the turn of events stating “I’d prefer they wouldn’t sell them,” but admitted it’s perfectly legal for private individuals to buy and sell guns, FOR NOW. Mayor Mike McGinn said at a news conference the private transactions are a loophole that needs to be closed. “There’s no background checks, and some (guns) could be exchanged on the streets that shouldn’t be in circulation.”

But Schuyler Taylor, a previous gun retailer attending the event in hopes of buying weapons, asked Why not offer them cash versus a gift card? I’m still taking the guns off the streets; they’re just going in my safe.

imagine how the lady in CT felt last month when she discovered she turned in a $30k+ firearm (STG44) for a few $ at a "buyback"

at least the Hartford police were honest enough to permit the lady to sell the historical firearm to get proper value. wonder how many people got minimal $ for something of value?

Gotta wonder with no background checks, how many of these so called "enthusiasts" have the potential to be the next Adam Lanza.

Adam Lanza could've passed a background check. He had no known criminal record.

I think the point is that some of these people who go to gun shows WOULDN'T pass a background check.

I've been tempted to do this in california myself. Unfortunately the programs are also during the day while I am work.

Given these guns often get melted down, it almost seems a civic duty to save old Arisakas, Springfields what have you.

You think... have u been to a gun show?

Most ppl at the gun shows are perfectly legit, most gun owners agree that enforcement of the existing law is required, which includes the check, unfortunately president and his little group wants to go beyond background check.

As you and other believe assualt rifle was used in sandy hook and should be banned, why does civilian need one?

Look at the links now it seems assualt rifle was never used in the shooting at sandy hook.

Adam Lanza was a court ruling away from being committed to a psychiatric facility. Yes, he could have passed a background check. And that right there is part of the problem. The dude was nutso but still good enough to go and buy firearms. No wonder we have that many murders and mass murders in this country.

Yes and the best solution would be qurantine the whole country's population and put military guards around them, how about that?

There will be no more adam lanza anymore.

If you wanna pay attention to detail go to the root cause of the problem.

That may be the case, but he still could've passed a background check at the time of this mass murder.

It seems that you have fallen for another piece of misinformation. The Connecticut state police is very clear on what weapons were used. They have updated their information on 18 Jan - three days after the misinformation you link to was spread - to clear up said misinformation.

** UPDATE **

STATE POLICE IDENTIFY WEAPONS USED IN SANDY HOOK INVESTIGATION;

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

In previous press conferences, the Connecticut State Police clearly identified all of the weapons seized from the crime scene at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

To eliminate any confusion or misinformation, we will again describe and identify the weapons seized at the school crime scene.

Seized inside the school:

#1. Bushmaster .223 caliber-- model XM15-E2S rifle with high capacity 30 round magazine

#2. Glock 10 mm handgun

#3. Sig-Sauer P226 9mm handgun

Seized from suspect’s car in parking lot:

#4. Izhmash Canta-12 12 gauge Shotgun (seized from car in parking lot)

This case remains under investigation.

Lt. J. Paul Vance

That may be the case, but he still could've passed a background check at the time of this mass murder.

Yes, he could have and that is scary as hell. That nutcases that are about to be comitted to mental institutions can legally acquire firearms. You don't see anything wrong with that picture?
