How long did it take to learn to drive?

So from reading the thread below and using the search, i cant find many people who tell us how long it actually took from getting into the driving seat for the first time to passing the road test. Whether you are a foreign spouse or a USC, how long did it take you? As in how many hours?

I am about to start taking professional driving lessons (nobody to teach me) at $60 an hour :help: so i am curious to know how long it took others. I will only be able to learn for 1 hour a week at that price, possibly two some weeks if work is good!

So, how long did it take? Tips and experiences are also very welcome!

I've been teaching my wife how to drive for 3 years. Either she is retarded...or brilliant(because as long as she doesn't have a license, she gets chaffeured around by me)...

It took me less than a month...I already have some practice in my homecountry but I didn't have my own car.

On my bday, my hubby gave a SUV as birthday gift but I didn't have a driver license, so I start practicing in my parking lot, I learnt how to avoid obstacles, how to park, backing up etc. I studied hard for my exam, but I failed only for 6 wrong questions of 40. Then 2 days later I try it again and I passed!

I strongly suggest you if you don't know how to drive, get a DRIVER'S PERMIT (is a driver license for people who's til learning and underage). To obtain it, you only need to take the writing test and pass!!! That's what I did. You can drive any time but with some restriction like you CAN'T drive alone, you will need an adult with a driver license (21 or older) to be with you while you are driving. In my case, I used to drive with my husband or my dad in law, never alone. At the beginning I was a lil bit nervous but then I was driving like a pro. When I started feeling more comfy, my husband gave me an GPS. So he started teaching me how to follow directions and addresses.

When they think I was ready I only took the practice test and I passed :)

I love driving in florida, compare to the Venezuelan's roads this is paradise, wide roads, people who knows what a blink light is

good luck

It will take an average person about a good month to learn how to drive, as long as they don't have any disabilities. You can not drive (even with a professional driving instructor) unless you have a learner's permit. To obtain a learner's permit you have to pass a written driving test and been a certain age. The age depends on where you live. A driver with a learner's permit can drive, but has certain restrictions, such as that you have to have a licensed driver in the car with you, you can only have a certain number of people in the car with you, you can only drive during the daylight hours etc. What the restrictions are depends where you live. My advise to you is to try and practice as much as you can before your road test, with and without your instructor.

I have a learners permit. I got it at the beginning of December as soon as i got my SSN! Nobody will let me in their cars so i am having to pay the only driving school in the area.. My husband also doesnt drive for personal reasons so after asking his family for nearly 2 months to no avail, im going to pay! I have taken the written test and there is a 5 hour course which needs to be done at some point after the permit test and before the driving test and i will be doing that today and tomorrow. Then all i need to do is get behind the wheel.

I have no idea how long it took in hours. My parents were extremely lazy and unmotivated when it came to teaching me how to drive. From the time I was 15 until days before 18, essentially. I know it took my husband 7-8 weeks to get me going on a manual. I'd say about 3-4 hours a week, so 21-24 hours.

Pro tips? Have patience, relax, study, and don't watch any crash videos on Live Leak. :secret:

wOW! your case is a lil bit complicated! if your husband doesn't drive and nobody wants to teach you, you did the right thing about paying someone else. I also got my permit on early december, but Im already driving my own. You need something more than 1 hour a week. You need to practice at least 1 hour 3 times a week.

A regular parking lot is a big help. For your driving test you will need to know: backing up, how to park, respect stops signs, 3 point turns, how to use the blink lights...youtube has so many cool tutorials so you have an idea and they are very helpful.

But driving is like riding a bike, you can only learn by practicing as much as you can. If you have friends or even neighbors you can trust, ask them to teach you even if that means, take them to the super market, grocery store, banks etc.

If you parctice at least 3 times a week for an 1, you should be driving well by the end of feb. Normally a month

Thanks. I dont have neighbors that are even remotely on the same planet as the rest of us. They were having an argument last week about why she shouldnt get a job when she can get welfare... :bonk: I dont really need to say more! They dont have cars either.

Im hoping my mother in law will let me drive her car once ive had a bit of practice with the instructor and i dont need her to tell me what to do every step of the way. She kept saying she would teach me but put it off again and again then last week said "Id teach you but im just too lazy and its cold out". We go out together regularly so all we need to do is switch seats! Maybe in a few weeks when ive learnt a bit.

The driving school is located 40 miles away and they only come to this town once a week so if im going to do more than one hour, it will unfortunately be in one go. I got a job specially to pay for it because its something i REALLY want to do. So i can basically spend most of my wages (that im not spending on health insurance!) on driving. Since i only work part time for minimum wage its probably only going to be 2 hours a week.

And after a horrendous taxi journey and asking my inlaws to drive me places every day for the last 9 days for work etc, i am absolutely determined to get on the road! I cant even get groceries without them. Its a real drain on everybody and so unfair on them.

Do you have a UK license? If you do you can rent a car on your foreign license and drive that (get the good insurance!). I took my drivers test in a rental because I was worried my truck would scare them :P

It didn't take me long to actually drive, what DID take a while was getting used to the side of the road, but i was a passenger for long enough that that became second nature before I actually got behind the wheel.

I did the learners stuff to get the permit and get on our insurance plan (didn't cover my foreign license) to practice a bit more myself and then I took the driving test. I would say maybe 2 weeks later I took the driving portion and passed easy. I made sure to pick the office that didn't take me somewhere crazy either :P
