Hi,everyone. I really need help. I just got married last Friday, and I changed my last name though court, and yesterday I tried to change my name on my social security card, but the people told me they cant change it there. So my questions are:

1).How can I know my name is totally changed in Aemrica?

2).Should I change my name before I apply for my green card?

3).Should I fill those forms after I get my name changed or I can just fill the form now using my new name?

I wish someone can help me. Thank you so much.

If you changed your name through the court, then you should have been able to change your name on your SS card using your name change document from the court. Why did you need to get it changed through the court? Your marriage certificate should act as your legal name change document for changing your name to your husband's.

File for AOS with the new married name you will be using from now on. Your EAD/AP and green card will come in the name you use on the AOS forms. The copy of your certified marriage certificate you must include will act as your legal name change document. If you do not go back to the SSA to try and get your name changed again before getting the EAD or green card, then go when you get one of those that will have your new married name on it. Use it and your marriage certificate to change the name on your SS card and get state ID/drivers license.

It very well may be that the person you spoke with at the SSA office is clueless.

Let's assume you have a SSN because of OPT, for now, aye?

You should go back in to that office, ask for a supervisor, and make another attempt.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Thank you for replying to me. The social security people told me I need to call homeland of security to get my name changed. My marriage license has my new name on it. Do you think I take that they will change my name?

Thanks again

Yeah,I am on my OPT right now, but I will go back to school from January again,so I will become F-1. I will try to go back and talk to them again. Thank you so much. Do you think I can fill all forms before I change my name on Social Security card and use my new name?

Did you actually come in on an F1? What visa did you enter on?

When you say "changed with the court" do you mean you just wrote your new name on the marriage license? Or did you pay for a legal name change and attend court to change your name?

1. Wait until you get your EAD or Greencard and it will be easier

2. You don't have to as the forms will help you change it. You can start changing your bank accounts etc but most likely anything else will wait till after you have your EAD or GC

3. Fill in the forms in your new name, include a copy of the name change document (marriage certificate or whatever else you used).

Yeah,I came in two years ago as an F1.

Yeah, I just wrote down my new name on the marriage license, I didnt pay anything to change my name. OK, so I will just begin to fill the form from now on, and include a copy of my marriage certificate. Thank you so much.

Oh, another question. where should I start to apply for my green card? My husband have to fill I-130 for me and I have to fill I-485 right?

on 2nd thought -

it will be really easier to change your name with 'everyone else'

once you have the EAD in hand from the AOS.

so, you can wait a bit on the name change.

re: filing for AOS - uhm - we have a guide for that, please come back on a PC, click the word 'Guides' at the top, and study a bit.
