Having said that, if one feels strongly about secession it would behoove one to take matters in one's own hands and buy a one-way ticket to another country, more suitable to one's lifestyle.

Or, just remove those trying to change the lifestyle the country is already used to.

Connecticut can do what Israel can't?

I think there's more Jews in CT than Israel, so they'll have some pull.

I so hate it when people move into a new neighborhood, and immediately set to changing things to resemble the place they found a need to leave.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Yeah, but watching a ragtag band of scrappy outsiders attempt to defeat the awesome power of the US Military sounds like something the whole family can enjoy. Like "The Apple Dumpling Gang" meets "Butch Cassidy" meets "Gone With the Wind" meets "Independence Day."

+1 for mentioning "The Apple Dumpling Gang"

Is that what's happening? Or are "real Americans" simply evolving with the rest of the world? It's perfectly natural for attitudes and beliefs to change over the years.

There are plenty of people who are born in America who believe the same things I do, even though I'm not from "this neighborhood" ... what's wrong with that?

That is what I meant. Those who are not happy with the country as it is, one nation, indivisible, can be removed as you recommend, but I suggest that they do it voluntarily if time is of the essence.

It's pretty obvious some people on this thread haven't done any travelling in 3rd world countries.

Which is precisely what the notion of secession entails, is it not?

The very idea of secession indicates devolution, rather. Any real American knows there is strength in the union.

It's a fact of military life that no army has ever won a guerilla war.

Yeah, until they borrow a page out of the Palestinian handbook and start lobbing rockets into small towns in Connecticut...

Exactly. Except Americans are "slightly" better armed than the average Palestinian.

So you're saying petitioning the white house was precisely the correct first step?

I'm not sure it's ever happened that way before, but assuming the federal government gives the OK, then yes, it would be up to the states. Of course actual secession would take more than 50,000 butt hurt whiners on a petition.
