Democrats Shift Language on Israel, Remove ‘God-Given’ From Platform

CHARLOTTE — For Democrats, there is no God in 2012 — at least as far as the party’s platform is concerned.

Nor is there a Jerusalem.

Democrats removed those two words, and the passages surrounding them, from the 2012 party platform as it was released this week.

Gone are three sentences identifying Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, now and forever.

Also gone is a previous reference to “God.”

DNC Israel Platform Reviewed, 'Loved' By AIPAC, Sources Say (UPDATE)

WASHINGTON -- An aide involved in drafting the Democratic Party's 2012 platform told The Huffington Post Tuesday that party insiders are "shocked" by the charge that the Middle East section is anti-Israel.

The Democratic platform has come under fire recently for removing explicit references to making Jerusalem the capital of Israel and for softening its declaration about how to handle Palestinian refugees in a Jewish state, among other things.

The 2004 and 2008 versions of the platform included stronger language on these issues.

But the aide and a second source affiliated with the party -- both of whom were not authorized to speak on the drafting process -- added that officials with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the hardline pro-Israel interest group, had reviewed and approved the language prior to its finalization.

"They loved it," said the aide who worked on the platform.

Drafters of the DNC platform say they made the decision to back away from earlier, stronger terms because so-called "final status issues" like these should not be included in the platform of a governing party.

"The Dems took out all the mentions of final status issues because it's silly to get into these in a party platform," the aide said. "It doesn't change the position of the Obama administration."

The aide continued, "But we replaced it with ridiculously pro-Israel language. You read the platform and it's like AIPAC wrote it. And now Republicans are saying it's anti-Israel? Seriously?"

Promising to move the American Embassy to Jerusalem and recognize that city as the formal capital of Israel has long been a popular presidential campaign theme -- until the actual work of governing sets in. In 1999, presidential candidate George W. Bush repeatedly promised to move the embassy, but never did so in eight years in office; presidential candidate Bill Clinton had made the same promises eight years earlier.

UPDATE: 9:04 p.m. -- A source close to AIPAC denied to HuffPost that officials from the group had reviewed and approved the "full Middle East platform" and said that the written submission made by AIPAC to the Democratic National Committee included "Jerusalem as the capital of Israel." The Democratic Party source stood by the initial report and insisted that AIPAC officials did review the draft language.

No facts in the RWN rant threads, please. They don't do facts. It's not only against their believes, facts are also destructive to their argument.

Platform excuse angers pro-Israel groups

Jewish leaders familiar with the Democratic National Convention platform process tell Right Turn that the allegation published tonight by the Huffington Post that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) vetted changes to the section of the party platform regarding Israel is “patently false.”

The Huffington Post reported that two unnamed Democratic sources claim that AIPAC saw, approved and “loved” the language. This was at odds with the near-uniform reaction of pro-Israel Democrats, as well as of outside groups, who raised complaints publicly and in private about how the platform language had changed from 2008. In that document, Democrats identified Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state, vowed to isolate Hamas and reiterated that Palestinian refugees should find a home in a future Palestinian state.

A source close to AIPAC, who was not authorized to speak on the record, told me this evening, “AIPAC officials were not in the room while the platform was being drafted. AIPAC did not receive or review the Middle East part of the platform.” The source continued, “Israel is our most reliable ally. ‘Jerusalem is the capital of Israel’ was part of the AIPAC submission to the platform committee.”

In other words, multiple sources say, the sources talking to the Huffington Post are lying.

Jennifer Rubin is hardly a credible source. She's a hack for hasbara, using her position as the Washington Post's "official conservative blogger" to endlessly repeat the talking points for militarist, right-wing neocon/Likudist/Greater Israel Zionist ideology.

In her blog, she blamed the Anders Breivik attacks in Norway on "Islamic jihadists," and then refused to apologize. She called Obama "the most anti-Israel president (ever)." She called the Occupy Wall Street protestors "anti-Semitic." (This after her piece on "Why the Jews Hate Sarah Palin," which repeated a whole slew of anti-Semitic stereotypes.) She promoted the racist rank from Rachel Abrams calling for released Palestinian prisoners - along with "their offspring" - to be thrown "into the sea, to float there, food for sharks."

Rubin is one of the people who has been working very hard to turn the once-respected Republican party into the Republikud party.

I am pretty sure Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel

Capital:

name: Jerusalem

geographic coordinates: 31 46 N, 35 14 E

time difference: UTC+2 (7 hours ahead of Washington, DC during Standard Time)

daylight saving time: +1hr, begins first Friday in April; ends the Sunday between the holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

note: Israel proclaimed Jerusalem as its capital in 1950, but the US, like all other countries, maintains its Embassy in Tel Aviv

As you know, the U.S. (like nearly every other country in the world) does not officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Ob brother... You just disproved the OP's opinion and made a case for the DNC. If, as the CIA says, Jerusalem is already the capital of Israel, we can safely say Romney must have offended the Israelis by saying he will recognize it as the capital of their country. I am surprised his campaign did not include a pledge to recognize Rome as the capital of Italy , ergo, the GOP must hate the Italians. rofl.gifrofl.gifrofl.gif

IMHO it is time that our politicians start paying attention to the issues we have right here in the USA, instead of pandering to the likes of Israel, as the GOP always does. The former administration made a similar promise to Israel and did not act upon it at all.

Furthermore, it is time our politicians stop using Israel as a bargaining chip and treating it as a third world banana republic as though the Israelis can't run or protect their countries to an acceptable degree. Israel has an exceptional intelligence service, competent politicians, as they come, to be sure, and they sure have shown the world their resolve, for better or worse. I find it laughable and exceedingly condescending that these less-aware politicians treat Israel as a child as though they needed the US to tell them what to do and when. If anything, not showing feigned interest would send a message that the US recognizes Israel as an ally and validate their claim to sovereignty to their country. If the GOP wants to pander to the American Jewish vote it would behoove them to treat Israel as an allied country and not as a puppet, dangling undeliverable carrots in front of their noses.

You mean just like the Dems pander to the minority vote?
