I am planning on changing my name when we get married, but what if I want to file the paperwork right away? Should I put my newly married surname? What identification do we need to show besides my birth certificate (which is obviously my maiden name)?

Will a marriage certificate be enough of evidence for name change?

Anyone ever have any problems with this?

Im not sure of the laws in your country, but I do believe once you get married and change your name, all of your documents with your maiden name are invalid. If you are sending a marriage cert. with your new family name, I would think you need to submit all other documents with that name. Maybe I am wrong, this is just my opinion. Why not get your documents changed to avoid any confusion?

You don't need anything for petition filing as evidence of a new name after marriage except the marriage certificate. You can go about changing passport and other ID later. Go ahead and file the petition as soon as you are ready with a certified copy of the marriage certificate. (Note: you only file a photocopy of the certified copy with the petition but you must HAVE it to copy it.)

I'm very new to VisaJourney.com, as this is my very first post! My fiance and I are getting married abroad in November. We plan on filing the paperwork immediately after our wedding to get the process started. Therefore there will be no time or oppurtunity for me to legally change my name in the U.S.A. I would like to think that by taking my new husband's last name, it would show great depth of our relationship and help solidify the Bona-Fide status.

Would it be a wise decision for me to simply change my name in the U.S. before I travel abroad for our wedding? If I do, would I still be able to travel with my Passport? (I will only be hyphenating my maiden and married names)

Thanks for any help!!

Whether or not you take your husband's name is your choice, it has no bearing one way or the other on the immigration process.

In my experence and it may vary also in which country you were filling . We got married backhome and ifilled all the papers under my maiden name. Even my passport is on my maiden name.

So i got a permanent resident ID under my maiden name. It worked fine with me . Goodluck!

Nope, wrong. All maiden name documents are still, of course, valid. Marriage cert proves name change.

I would like to think that by taking my new husband's last name, it would show great depth of our relationship and help solidify the Bona-Fide status.

Nope it doesn't help prove bonafide marriage at all. You can change your name when you divorce, so it doesn't really prove anything.

I am planning on changing my name when we get married, but what if I want to file the paperwork right away? Should I put my newly married surname? What identification do we need to show besides my birth certificate (which is obviously my maiden name)?

Will a marriage certificate be enough of evidence for name change?

Nope no-one's ever had trouble except if they didn't conform to the name change laws of their state. It's quite common. Write your maiden name anywhere it asks for "other names used" and put your MARRIED name in the other places.
