Hi Everyone,

I am newbies here. I am planning to petition my father who is a widower. My husband retired and I don't work since I taking care of our son. Our house is fullypaid and have some investment from my husband's retirement money. We don't have any credit card debt and so forth. Does anyone here have an idea if I am qualified to petition my father?

All for now, Thanks!

Yes, of course you are qualified to petition for your Father.

A petition is basically asking the government for permission to apply for a visa.

You are more than welcome to petition for your Father, however nobody here can predict the outcome of your petiton as that depends on so many factors.

Yes, you can file a petition for him.

From what you've told us, you will have to secure a joint sponsor who will file an I-864 to go along with your I-864. This can be your husband or any other US citizen of green card holder.

How old is your father? How will you help your father obtain health insurance? Does your father plan to be working when he in granted a green card?

Ok...from what you said "This can be your husband or any other US citizen of green card holder." Is this mean that I can ask anybody close to me to be a sponsor?... I doubted if my husband is qualified to be a co-sponsor since he is a retired and depending on SS pension.

My father is 76 yrs. old and probably he won't look for a job. I just want him to visit us here since he is the only grandparent left for my son.

I wonder if SS pension is consider as income?

So are you asking about a Vistor Visa or are you talking about petitioning for your father so he can live here. Because you said visit. Is he going back?

I am not trying to discourage you. I hope everything works out for you.

However, your father as an LPR will not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. Anyone who sponsors your father would be liable if your father gets sick.

For example, if your father receives Medicaid for treating an illness, then the sponsors would need to pay the bills.

Because your father is old and is likely to need medical care, I would NEVER EVER SIGN AN I-864 for him as your friend if I know that I may have to pay his medical bills.

Essentially, anyone that signs the I-864 for you is saying that he/she will pay your father's medical bills. Of course, you will be first in line. Then, the co-sponsor.

Okay you don't need a sponsor for a visitir visa that is what your father will be filling out an application for. This is something he does on his end and goes to the embassy and has his own interview. He has to show strong ties to his country. For his age I don't know what he does.

But a Visa no not for just a visit you don't need that since you said its just for the summer.

Have you told your friend that she would be liable for your father's medical bill if he gets sick in the US?

You only need a sponsor if your father intends to immigrate, i.e. move here permanently.

If he only intends to visit, he need a tourist visa. He has to apply and qualify on his own for it, and convince the CO that he will return to PI. You are not involved.

I have asked that this be moved to the Visitor Visa forum.

He should be able to get travel insurance so all the main issues go away.
