Is a male engagement ring likely to be an issue?

Hey guys,

I proposed "officially" this weekend whilst on vacation and out of the blue, my fiancée slipped a ring on my finger as well!

I thought it was a lovely idea since well be apart.

However, I know that engagement rings for guys are fairly uncommon, so should I wear it to the interview/medical? Are they going to assume its a wedding ring?

I don't want to go without it, and in many ways I think it looks worse trying to 'hide' it, but I'm not sure what I should do.

Thanks!

My fiance, now husband, at the time of the interview wore his engagement ring and all of our pictures we separated for the the interview showed it aswell. I know its not common in the U.S for a male to wear an engagement ring but for me it was and he loved the idea and at the interview nothing was questioned about it and neither we had to show any pictures.

The only difference for us was, engagement rings in my country for both, male and female, stays in the right hand. Once you marry it goes to the left hand, I believe that if they ever noticed that at the embassy stage they would know the country's culture and even if questioned we would've told the CO what was meant for, I think you should be fine. If the CO ever ask about it just tell him honestly that it is an engagement ring, no big deal.

Si, man.

Someone (I've forgotten whom) once observed, "Any man who wears more than one watch and one ring looks like a lounge-singer named Vic."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I can't see why it would be a problem but if it concerns you or may act as a distraction then maybe just leave it off for the interview.

Long distance relationships are anything but conventional and who knows this more than the consulate who faces a wide variety of situations within these kinds of relationships. By wearing the ring, you are just 1 in a crowd of those who do all they can to stay "connected" during your time apart and likely strengthening your case in the eyes of an experienced immigration officer.

My fiancee wears mine (engraved) on her necklace-and (lol) occupationally uses my brand of body spray to feel connected-it's in all shapes and sizes and it's all about love-what they are after is just that-seeing 2 people truly in love. Good luck to you-good luck to me too..

I agree with Matthew/Carolina - We exchanged rings as well for our engagement and wear them on the right. I wouldn't hide it. Just be honest about the situation (if asked) because that is what really happened. Plus, I assume you have pictures with the ring on or maybe a comment in your chats/emails, etc and you have a ring, but then at your interview you don't. Too much fuss trying to hide it. Good luck on your journey!

London will not be concerned with jewelry. They will not be trying to catch you out. They will also not look at (or file) any photos (with or without rings) or chats or emails or anything about your relationahip. Zero. Zip. They will be concerned about your proper birth certificate, police certificate, and adequate Affidavit of Support.

Thank you Nich-Nick for further clarification on what London will or won't do specifically. However, with my examples, I was generally speaking on being consistent and not hiding something (no matter the location). I apologize if I was speaking out of turn, but I hope my thoughts on the subject would still be useful to the OP and the rest of us since it currently appears in the K-1 Forum and not the UK Regional Forum.

I was really addressing the OP and supplementing my earlier post that it should not be a worry. I would have quoted you if I thought you had spoken out of turn. Everybody's thoughts are useful.

I would like to advise all the K1s that once you've learned how to file an I-129F in this forum, you should find your regional forum (if any) and see what you can learn about your consulate. Start preparing while you wait. Asking a question about a London interview in the K1 forum will not necessarily get a London answer. When I was new here, I never scrolled down past the top forum (K1) so I think there are others who may have as many problems as I did finding my way. Reading the reviews from your embassy will also give you clues of how it is in your country. Consulate procedures are very different from place to place so I try to find the London folks and offer my experience of studying London procedures for 4 years.

I see you also have the Houston office. We didn't have an adjustment of status interview, but they were quite efficient last month at the citizenship interview. Very little waiting around. Good luck to you on a speedy process. (F)

Before we got engaged we both wore promise rings on our right ring fingers and he was able to get not only a J1 visa but a K1 visa the following year :) Australia is different than UK I know but I'm sure it will be fine, just explain it to them at the interview if they ask! :)
