Thinking about cell phone options for when my fiance gets here...

I've been on Verizon for eons and have always been happy with the coverage (if not the prices). Looking at options for my fiancé once he makes it to this side of the pond, though, I see that MetroPCS has some really affordable no-commitment plans. They're so affordable that I'm tempted to switch myself (once my contract runs out in 2082, that is).

Can anyone who has a phone with them weigh in on the signal quality or lack thereof, particularly once you get out of the heavily populated urban centers? We'll both be spending most of our time in Boston, which (judging from MetroPCS's coverage map) seems to have excellent coverage. But if coverage is spotty outside the northeast corridor/FL/CA, then it would probably make more sense for me to keep my Verizon access so that at least one of us will have signal when we travel.

Anyone?

Whether it's with Verizon or another carrier, you should look into one of the "family" plans. I added a second phone and phone number on my Verizon account that was for my fiancé, so when he was in town, he would have a local phone to use rather than getting charged to death for using his UK phone. Once he's here for good, he'll just keep the phone on my second line, but we'll do the "family" plan where you share a pool of minutes, etc.

The last time I checked, Verizon's family plans didn't really save much if you have only 2 phones, and I'd rather get something that he can start out with right out of the gate easily but that he isn't locked into for years. I'm planning to start the plan before he gets here, so I can bring him the phone to use during his trip to the US.

Did u look at Virgin Mobile they are even cheaper and their coverage is good

Good idea! So far I've checked Verizon, Boost, Sprint, MetroPCS, and now Virgin Mobile, and the MetroPCS plan I'm considering for him (it's a limited-time special) is the lowest price I've seen. Any other ideas?

I was with Verizon for 8 years and I just switched to MetroPCS ... I get EVERYTHING I had with Verizon but for 1/3 less ... It's worth it. I even did an early termination fee. PLUS I get a subscription to Rhapsody so I can create playlists in music. I am a very satisfied customer --- ALSO, you only pay for what you want ... not these big package deals of bells and whistles you don't use.

Hmmm, I don't see any plans with 120 countries free, but his country probably wouldn't be one of them anyway. Good to hear about the coverage, though! The plan I'm looking at is $25/month unlimited talk and text, which would work just fine for me, at least (haven't joined the smartphone century yet and not eager to, and he's not accustomed to internet on his phone either, so I'm thinking he can do without it initially, or at least until he's working and we have more money to work with). I'm currently paying ~$45/month for 450 daytime minutes & 250 texts (I never exceed either of these, but I do have to think about it) and roadside assistance.

So, MetroPCS would save me a bunch. My family is on Verizon but they rarely call and then only in the evening, which is free for them whether I'm on Verizon or not. Hmmm.

I was with Verizon for 8 years and I just switched to MetroPCS ... I get EVERYTHING I had with Verizon but for 1/3 less ... It's worth it. I even did an early termination fee. I'm guessing their pricing might be regional the way Verizon's is, because the MetroPCS site automatically recognizes your location, but here is a page that describes it.

Personally, I switched to Boost last summer and have been very pleased. When my beloved got here last month, we went the 2nd day and got him on, too. I like that there are no contracts and no games. For 60$/month, he has unlimited calls to his home country (to land lines and cheap calls to cells) along with internt (not used), email access (not used), FB (not used), texting, and the ability to send and receive data (but not internationally). It is WAY cheaper than any other plan we ever had and the price drops every 6 months that it is paid on time, so there is an added incentive to keep track of it. Coverage has been pretty good and I recommend it to everyone. Relatives in Georgia had the same story.

I have had 3 other contract cell numbers before this one and none were as reliable. (Cingular, Sprint, T-mobile). In addition, both Sprint and T-mobile continued to charge me after I cancelled service with them. I am furious about that. Calling, writing, and emailing my cancellation is not enough. Transferring the phone line didn't seem to end the service, either. Sigh. What a rip off.

Anyone?

I had Metropcs, $45 a month for unlimited local calls and international text messaging. It didn't work well for me, calls would drop at times and its coverage wasn't good in some parts of my apartment. At my work place i had to go out of the building to make calls. It's wasn't fun during winter

one thing i hated about cricket and metropcs (i tried both as some testing stuff) is that if you drive outside of yer listed metro coverage area, you have to call and tell them, else the phone is dead when you arrive in that other city.

I switched to Boost Mobile, reprogrammed an HTC 6800 Mogul, and never looked back. I travel all over the USA, Boost uses Sprint's backbone.

If you get a boost-specific phone, that's one thing. If you do as I did, and get yer own phone and have it reprogrammed to work on Boost, that's another thing. I use this phone as a wireless access point when I'm out at some farm area, and it works very well.

Whoa, really? That doesn't sound good at all: I think I will drop by their office near work and ask how they can possibly have such a dumb system. It would probably still be fine for him, but if what you said is the case, I will keep my Verizon coverage (if nothing else so that he can use my phone to call to let MetroPCS know when we have traveled somewhere!).

i dunno - that's how it was in Houston and Dallas metro areas, on both providers, 2 years ago. If things have changed, that's a plus. I Love Boost.
