hello....my understanding is because you are not a legal immigrant you cannot apply for a social security number but you can request a tax payer identification number though.

i live around people and have worked with people wh are ot legal but they are not eligible for SSN.

tax payer id number are for those who are not eligible for a ssn number.

look up the social security administration website and follow the instructions.

good luck!

Hey everyone

I was wondering if I am a foreign citizen, married to an american citizen but still not legal, yet working for an american cruise line in USA, could I request SSN, and if I could, what would I need to do? And what are the requirements to obtain SSN?

No.

what is the status of the I-130 petition and subsequent visa application?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

My C1/D visa is valid till 2016, and from what I read on the social security admin. website, I would also need I-94, which I'll get once on the ship, so I wanted to know if I could obtain SSN based on the C1/D visa, in case I'd decide to work on shore.

My husband unfortunately withdrawn the petition due to some quarrels that we had and so far I don't know if he will want to resend it. I am, however, trying my best to have him resend it, since is nothing serious and he has no intention of divorcing or anything like that. Main thing is, that in the mean time, I'd like to know what other options do I have to work in the states, on shore side, as I'm tired doing ships.

C1/D visa is a dead end road. Other than allowing you to work on a ship and transion from one place to another, it gives you no other benefits.
