Quick question - are InfoPass appointments to get I-551 stamps only needed if you don't get your NOA1 before you plan on travelling?

My conditional GC expires on the 24th. I don't have my NOA1 yet (though check cashed on Monday so I'm hoping to see it very soon). I'm not planning on travelling overseas for a while (we're talking several months), so do I actually need to do anything, even if I don't get my NOA by the 24th?

Just want to make sure I'm not likely to get into any trouble.

You need your NOA1, especially if your GC will be expiring while you are abroad.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Sorry, must not have been very clear.

I'm NOT going to be travelling anywhere outside of the US for a long time. I'm basicaly asking, do I immediately become an illegal immigrant as soon as my GC expires if I don't have in my possesion my NOA1? Or am I okay since they have my ROC application and have cashed the cheque?

5/31/2012 - Packet delivered to CSC

6/11/2012 - Check cashed

Oh, I skipped the "not" ;) I thought you were going on extended holiday!

You are okay because you applied within the 90 days preceding the expiration on your card. You did your part.

You won't be "illegal" if you haven't received your NOA/extension letter as long as they've actually processed it, but i'll be harder to prove you're in the US legally if you need to. It's probably worth making an infopass appointment to get your passport stamped with the extension.

I think your covered. You have proof that they have your package and they cashed your check, not much more you can do but wait.

The extension grants you permanent stay, travel and work authorization. Travel is one part of it but the stamp or NOA would also cover you and your employer if they ask for the green card again if they keep track of when it expires etc. Like the poster said, it's not like you find yourself illegal all of a sudden, but you do need the proper documents to have a nice smooth life lol....soooooo the NOA1 covers that and so does the stamp. Just odd that a few of us haven't received the NOA1 but got the biometrics appointment. California got our package May 16th. The biometrics letter was date noticed June 7th and I received it the 9th....they've got me waiting for Santa Clause on an NOA that apparently has a date of Jun 1st or something but yet it's taking 17 days to get here. Hoping it's in the mail today. :bonk:

Good stuff and way to go !! Yes the info pass is likely the best option. I'm giving it until Friday as per the last call with NVC and I suspect the NOA1 won't be in the mail. If it arrives, great; but I'll likely do an info pass and get the stamp. My biometrics appointment is June 28th. The other thing is that my Canadian passport expires Dec 2012....if I get it stamped, I have to surrender that passport to Canada to get another one....and I would not want to surrender a passport that has a stamp. It makes me want to get a new passport now and then have them stamp it. Such a pain in the #### simply because the ridiculous NOA was either not sent or delivered. completely inconvenient at every level including taking time off work to get that info pass appointment etc.

Again all letters from service centers should be made to have signatures upon receipt....and if not, then NVC should be able to have a second NOA1 issued if there is any glitch ie not delivered or not sent; it's not like having two NOA1s will change anything. not like it's two SSNs or two green cards. It's a letter extending your green card for one year from a certain date to another date. Why can't one simply be reissued. They must have something on their files that it was sent....send another one, there's been a problem .....

Silly jackwagon stuff if you ask me. <_<

I called the USCIS and they suggested to do an INFOPASS. Because my GC expires this 25th, I have scheduled an INFOPASS tomorrow and will ask for one-year extension which has never arrived, yet! Also tomorrow I'm going to ask if I can have early biometrics because my schedule is on June 27th. I remember being able to have biometrics done earlier than scheduled when I was applying for AOS but that was 2 years ago things may have changed but hopefully they will allow that taken tomorrow as well, so like you mentioned above, saves time from having to take time off work!

Reunited for good and it feels so good!

Let me know how you make out on this. I'm curios about whether you get the I 551 stamp and if it's only for travel or if the 551 also gives you the work extension....or whether you get something else confirming extension while they process. Would be best to get the biometric sooner anyway so they can move on that quicker

Stamp extends your conditional status for a year. It's good for working and travelling. I'm still hopeful to get the Extension Letter in the mail (NOA 1 as you call it).

Hope my information is useful, but I'm not an expert. I guess more detailed info can be found on this site through the search window.
