Hi everyone this is my first post here even though I've read and taken a lot of information from this website and really appreciate all the help that it has to offer.

Hopefully this question has not already been asked as I wasn't able to find it by searching but, I know this will happen in the near future and I'm concerned of what your opinions are on it and what are my options?

It hasn't happened yet, but I am soon to be deployed and the town I live in is not a walking friendly town at all, all the nearest grocery stores etc. are miles away. My soon to be wife has never driven before, and does not have a license, even in her home country. When she comes here, I expect to be deployed very soon and may not have enough time to finish the marriage, adjustment of status paperwork, and get her a drivers license in time. If this happens, what am I to do? Most of my friends will deploy with me so I'm not even sure I can get someone to deliver to the house. Maybe make good friends with the neighbors?

Help, I'm thinking out loud, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas or has went through a similar situation and what they did.

Contact the key spouses of the squad or the family support unit etc. They have ALL kinds of things in place to help new spouses and people who need help in these kinds of situations.

If she is not here yet, maybe you can arrange for driving lessons in her home country? At least the practical learning would be out of the way then.

In some states you can waive the length of having a learner's permit however the hours might remain the same. But lessons in home country would be a good idea before throwing her to the wolves in the US. I think it's worth calling the license branch to hear about it.

Lol, I know the topic is of concern to the OP but I can't help but laugh.

Best bet is to start driving lessons before she goes to the US, that way she breezes through the US lessons asap and you guys can have things settled before you deploy.

:bonk: I meant the FRG * Family readiness group*

They should at least be able to help acclimate your wife and adjust to military life and hopefully they should be able to help her orgainise driving lessons and things.

I would also pre- arrange lessons for your wife to be and maybe see if there are any groups/clubs for people from her home country where she could meet people and makes friends (who might drive and or want to teach her or drive her places).

Let us know what you decide !

Tell her to enroll in driving school in Philippines and she can get an international drivers licensed there, and when she got here she just need to take the exam and driving test and she need to present her international drivers licensed.

You mean a Permit I presume.

Maybe she considers studying driving in the Philippines and gets her license there while u guys are still waiting for her visa. Or like the other poster mention get a bike. Most of the Filipinos knows how to bike so I don't think she's mind biking.

The longer it takes to happen the more you'll appreciate it when it does!

most driving schools on the PI will help her get a license but she will not know how to drive..........

i will explain, she will have ZERO time behind the wheel & still not know how to drive a car.

yes yes i know it all sounds crazy

most people learn how to drive by watching their parents

if her parents don't own a car (my inlaws don't)

then i will probably take her between 4 & 6 trys to really know how to drive & pass the road test here

that is about the average for the average Pinay

please don't shoot the messenger :innocent:

i'm sure once my wife arrives in June i'll have all sorts of fun teaching her how to drive, however i'm the guy who signed

up for this....didn't I???

the only question i have is can she stay in the Philippines till you return from duty

or can she stay with her inlaws? most Pinays are used to always being around other people

i'm talking 24/7, if she is all alone for a year that mite become a huge problem

good luck
