I was wondering if anyone knows where I can check my credit score for free and without becoming victim of identity theft (by giving my ssn to some fishy website).

Able to check all three credit agencies for free once a year.

Is this for the credit report or for the credit score? I checked my credit report several times but it only shows whether there are pending or otherwise unsolved claims. I know there is a 3-digit number which represents a person's trustworthiness, but I can't find a way to find out what mine is.

Just apply for a credit card (or any line of credit) with Wells Fargo. Can't talk for other banks, but they may be the same.

Once you are accepted, they send you a letter saying what your interest rate will be - and that letter contains.... your current FICO score.

I applied for one in the past for WF, but I was rejected due to insufficient credit history. My FICO score wasn't even taken into account or shared with me. I currently have a Capital One unsecured credit card with a credit limit of $500 (it was increased from $300 last week), but I have only had it for 6 months and at this time it seems like nobody else is willing to grant me credit or to increase my credit limit. My problem is that I travel a lot for work and need to advance considerable amounts (international flights, hotels, etc.) and with $500 I don't even cover the cost of the plane ticket. So far I have been paying cash (using my debit card) but this means that I need to pay out of pocket several thousands of dollars upfront and wait approximately one month to get reimbursed from my employer. Not an ideal situation. Any idea on where I could get a better credit card? The secured card possibility is not viable either, because I would still need to deposit the amount of the credit with a third party, so this would not solve the issue.

Did you try applying for a credit card with your wife/husband as a co-signer (assuming he/she has decent credit score) ?

We did that, asked for a limit said "whatever you are willing to give me", received a card with $3k limit and 10% APR and two months into using it I am starting getting offers from other credit card companies (no annual fee and other ####### like that - by the way - personal data privacy in this country does not exist at all).

Apply for credit, and if they turn you down, they have to supply you with your complete credit report, free of charge.

You're thinking of the FICO score, and the only way you'll get that is to pay for it. You won't get it with a new credit card.

BUT if you did just get a denial, the letter should give you information on how to get the three free credit reports. You can get them free once a year or if you've been recently denied credit. You're right, there are fake sites that will try to get you to pay money. You want the real site. It will redirect you to the other sites you'll use. Um, I don't know the url offhand, sorry.

Building credit is a slow process in the beginning. Take that secured card and apply for a gas card at one the majors like Chervon, Texaco, etc, then move on to the dept. stores (just 1 only) and apply for a card. Add two revolving accounts + your secured card, be careful now to add too much new credit, it dings your score. Then let your credit season a bit.

Your credit is still very new, your payment history is too new and too short, your credit needs to season a bit. You have to show good management of what you have, be aware of reported utilization of the card(s) you have. New creditors tend to look negatively upon one who is trying to acquire a lot of new credit in a short period. Hence, partly the reasons you get turned down when applying for new credit. A person with new credit can build great credit faster than one with damaged credit.

Inquiries remain for 2 years, but FICO scores them for only the first year, so be cautious of too many inquiries.
