Just a quick one guys. Me and my fiance are planning just a civil ceremony after I get the visa and the reception etc next year when we save a bit of money... The question is, how much time does it take to organize a small civil one and what's involved? I know we need a marriage licence which cost around $30 and we can get within a day in New Mexico but how does it look like when it comes to the actual ceremony?

All we needed was a marriage license. We were given a list of people who could perform the ceremony and then we contacted two of my husband's friends to be witnesses. It was very quick to set up (it really all depended on when the justice of the peace was available), and only took about 5 minutes for the actual ceremony.

When the county judge is performing marriages at the courthouse. Contact your local county clerk.

I will check the county and state regulation for applying for a marriage license. For example, in Athens, Georgia, you apply for a pre-marriage certificate, which last for 6 months until you get married, then after you r married, you get the certificate the same day. Some counties have discounts (about 50% of the marriage certificate) if you take a pre-marital orientation class. Each county and state is different and have their own rules. I think it is important to do a little research to have an idea about this

It has been said that USCIS does not like Vegas Weddings, but she didn't blink an eye at ours.

We got married in Vegas too and the IO who interviewed us for our AOS just smiled - asked us what we did there, if we gambled. ^_^ It wasn't a big deal :)

We didn't get married in those theme-type chapels. We got married in the Little Church of the West (it's the oldest chapel in Vegas - http://en.wikipedia....rch_of_the_West)

It was very nice! http://www.littlechurchlv.com/ Not at all what I expected in Vegas! I was actually afraid we would end up in one of those tacky chapels but my sister-in-law and her husband picked the absolute best one! They were the witnesses to our wedding and they paid for the chapel / minister services as one of our wedding gifts ^_^ The chapel has a pretty gazebo where we took pictures before and after the wedding (we got married at night!) - http://www.littlechu...w-gallery?gid=3

Your plans sound really romantic! What about getting married on a cliff during sunset? ;) I think I remember someone posting about that before ^_^

Assuming you will be in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, a relatively short drive into Trinidad (Colorado) will get you: the same $30, same day license and the option to do the ceremony yourself. Colorado is one of the few states that allows solemnizing the marriage by the bride and groom. Cost: nothing (and witnesses are optional). We did it (in Denver, Red Rocks). You choose the place: the parking lot (not very romantic though), or some of the amazing picturesque areas around, like Raton Pass.

They can also marry you at no cost at the license office right after you pay for the license.

You can drive to Trinidad, marry and come back same day to Alb or Santa Fe. If in Taos, even better (for a party).

The ways people marry are as diverse as people are in the world. Anything and everything is possible and thus, how much it will be.

I personally don't like Las Vegas (Las Vegas Nevada that is, there is also a Las Vegas NM), too artificail for our taste (and we were in Las Vegas the week before we marry), but that's just us

Alternatives to all this, Sandia mountains and especially Madrid, a town on the back side of I-25, nearby Alb; or How about the ski areas in Santa Fe?, the Old Town, etc.

Oh really? that sounds great! are those proxy marriages really valid around the states when you do that in Colorado? how does it look like? you just sign the papers in your own time and bring them back to the license office?

When it comes to a place, we've actually been to Taos Ski Valley for New Year's Eve, it was amazing!!!... I bet Colorado is much nicer... we both love mountains so that would suit us perfectly!

Yes my fiance is from Albuquerque so there is a lot of great options near by!

Yes I really want to do something amazing... and I wish it was just two of us! I know my fiance wants to have a reception for his friends and his family (mine most probably won't be able to attend anyway since none of them will be able to get a visa )but I promised him we would do that next year when all the visa madness is over... but my dreamy wedding is just two of us, vows the way we want it, not the way we are expected etc...i was thinking somewhere in the mountains during the spring when everything wakes up to life :)but I guess I can't be really picky when it comes to the season since we have no idea when we have the visa in hand :)

hiring that chapel had to be expensive I guess!

Hey if you guys want cheap civil marriage just go to google and search cheap marriage packages in Las Vegas , it depends on the package you pick but you can get something good within $250 to $450 that includes , limo service, church blessing , a lil part , take up to 14 of your friends and relatives and video coverage, so I will advice you to start planning, I think its convenient and cheaper to get married in Vegas through organizer. Wish you all the best.
