Download the forms and see if you can answer the questions. They are straightforward and if you need help the entire forum is here. If you are single and your fiance is single and there is no drama like kids, unemployment, criminal charges, etc, then I see no need for an attorney.

You can always get one later remember!

You can do it your self. If you do not have any DUI or other criminal records then it should be some what simple. I find that process little bit confusing but I am not good with paperwork's and stuff so it was little bit tough for me and I lost 1 month due that.

I just send my I-129F and I hope that I did not mess things up. Will see.

Providing you have no serious criminal convictions and no immigration overstays or previous misrepresentation issues with the USA you will be fine. No attorney required. read the wiki's for the k1 process and ask plenty of questions to other VJers and you will be okay.

Not knowing better (and not knowing about VJ at the time), I hired an attorney. Part of me thought it might've helped to show we were serious, but at the same time.... when I got the paperwork from them, I had to make corrections before sending it. The worst part of it was that I had printed out the forms and written in the answers for them!

I recommend at least waiting - like someone else said, you can always get a lawyer later if you feel you need one. Of course, if there are any unusual issues, I would definitely suggest getting one. Otherwise, I would definitely say to try it on your own.

Good luck!

You should first consider your case. Have there been any legal problems in you or your fiancee's life so far? Problems with US immigration such as overstays or deportations? Problems concerning children/custody/divorces? It's very possible that your case is as straightforward as two people meeting and falling in love, with no big red flags in which case you should consider doing it on your own. Filing the paperwork is fairly easy, so long as you take a good, long look at the guides and instructions. The people here are great and they will try to help out as much as possible. Good luck and congratulations on your engagement.

Yea what Andy said...I came here with the same question, AFTER I had a free initial consult...I decided to go with this forum and the great people here and never looked back and saved thousands of dollars.

Ditto what others have said. Aside from the waste of money, it seems that few folks have had poorly filled out applications by attorneys which resulted in RFEs, and the attorneys tend not to be the fastest in sending off the application in the first place (I recall one lady who seemed to have figured out that USCIS got her application 6 weeks after she gave the papers to her attorney - whereas I filled it all out once the jetlag wore off from the trip where we got engaged :))

Don't ask an atty this question. He will convince you to hand over $2300 dollars to file your K1 and promise you a faster visa.

Just ain't true. Read the guides here, download the forms, and away you go for free, DYI.

Lawyers not needed unless your case is complicated with legal, criminal or immigration issues.

An atty will actually slow down your process with him as a middleman.

Good luck.
