The National Defense Authorization Act is the Greatest Threat to Civil Liberties Americans Face

Blame both parties for this fckd up bill.

http://loyalopposition.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/30/president-obama-veto-the-defense-authorization-act/

The provisions were co-sponsored by Senators Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, and John McCain, Republican of Arizona, both of whom should know better. Their excuse was that some Republicans had proposed worse rules. But the smart response to that situation would have been to block faulty legislation outright, not to make a really bad deal.

A deal, by the way, that Senator Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee, said was hashed out behind closed doors without consultation with his committee, or the Intelligence Committee, or the Defense Department, the F.B.I. or the intelligence community.

Senator Mark Udall, Democrat of Colorado, introduced a very sensible amendment this week, with Mr. Leahy’s backing. It would have stripped the detainee measures out of the Defense Authorization Act. That proposal was defeated on Tuesday, 61-37. Click here to see how your Senator voted. (If your Senator’s a Republican, he or she almost certainly voted “no.”)

The Pentagon, the intelligence community, the Justice Department and the White House oppose the detainee rules. The people who would have to carry out these boneheaded policies think they would actually weaken national security.

Fortunately, President Obama has threatened to veto the Defense Authorization Act. Republicans, especially the gang competing for their party’s presidential nomination, will jump all over him if he does that.

Don’t be fooled by their fear-mongering. The act does not actually allocate money for the military. The appropriations bill does that. Mr. Obama can use his veto power without hurting the military. In fact, our national security depends to a very real extent on him keeping his word.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

95 in favor and 90 against - that's what i'd call a majority ;)

the senate could have rejected it - but it didn't happen - but let's fixate on the house instead for a deflection.

When you count in the 6 NVs on the Dem side, there was no Democratic majority for this bill. If the House doesn't pass it, the Senate doesn't get vote on it. If the GOP is the party that would oppose it, they could have stopped it. They didn't. Their counterparts in the House supported this ####### so overwhelmingly that they would have needed ZERO votes from the other side of the aisle to pass it. Face it, man, this is YOUR Republicans fcuking you from behind.

Here's Levin bragging on it to his Michigan constituents:

"Levin Announces Michigan-Related Projects in National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2012

Friday, December 2, 2011

WASHINGTON — Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced the authorization of funding for programs with the potential to tap into Michigan’s manufacturing and research strengths in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012. The annual bill governing the policies and programs of the Department of Defense was approved yesterday by the Senate by a vote of 93 to 7.

“Michigan continues to be a center of innovation and manufacturing excellence, strengths that are important not only to our economy, but to our national security,” Levin said. “This legislation recognizes Michigan’s central role in helping our military develop and build the vehicles, weapons and other systems to protect our country and give our troops the tools they need to complete their important missions.”

The bill includes $170.4 million for Army research on combat vehicle and automotive technologies through the Army Tank and Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren. TARDEC is the Department of Defense’s leading laboratory for research and development of advanced military vehicle technologies, including efforts to protect Army vehicles against rocket propelled grenades, improvised explosive devices and explosively formed projectiles; advanced materials for tactical vehicle armor; more efficient engines; fuel cell and hybrid electric vehicles; unmanned ground vehicles; computer simulations for vehicle design and training of Army personnel; and technology partnerships with the automotive industry and academia.

The bill also includes funding for the programs of the Army’s TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC) in Warren. TACOM LCMC is the Army’s lead organization for the development, acquisition, and support of ground vehicle combat, automotive and armaments technologies and systems; weapons and equipment for Soldiers; and other critical integration and logistics functions. TACOM LCMC-managed systems include the Abrams main battle tank, Bradley Fighting Vehicle, Stryker Armored Vehicle, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, and all Army tactical vehicles, such as the HMMWV and Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles. No one cared that we lost basic civil rights when they came up with Homeland security and they don't care now that we have lost more rights. It is now OK for a president of the United States to assassinate an American citizen. Obama the Socialist became a judge, jury and executioner. Very few cared.

Homeland Security was Bush's pet project. If Obama doesn't veto this then he's hamburger.

Democrat? Republican? The problem is bipartisan and it's called Washington.

Our dear mod suggested otherwise in the thread title.

And you tried to shift responsibility onto the Republicans. So what? You're both wrong. Nothing unusual there.

Check the bolded above.

It passed in the House which is controlled by the Republicans, it passed in the Senate which is controlled by the Democrats. The Bill itself was written up by a Democrat and a Republican. Both parties fckd us.

Now the ball is in Obama's court. If he doesn't veto this Bill, then he's a complete douche imo.
