http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/seattle-welfare-recipient-lives-million-dollar-home-161252749.html

A Seattle woman who is receiving welfare assistance from Washington state also happens to live in a waterfront house on Lake Washington worth more than a million dollars.

Federal agents raided the home this weekend but have not released the woman or her husband's name because they have not officially been charged with a crime.

However, federal documents obtained by KING 5 News show the couple currently receives more than $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, plus state and government disability checks and food stamps. They have been receiving the benefits since 2003.

The 2,500 square-foot home, which includes gardens and a boat dock, is valued at $1.2 million. And even though the couple has been receiving the benefits for nearly 10 years, records show that they accurately listed the address of their current home when applying for the state and federal benefits.

A federal official told KING 5 that the couple likely took advantage of a loophole, which allows low-income individuals to receive financial assistance to help them pay their rent and move away from housing projects. However, the law does not require officials to verify what type of home the benefits recipient is living in.

As if the million dollar home weren't enough, the supposedly low-income couple also gave money to various charities and traveled around the world to locales in Turkey, Tel Aviv and resort towns in Mexico, according to court records.

Whats the problem here, these folks either used fraud to get the freebies or they didn't.

The system is not set up to use the same common sense you or I might exercise if we were giving money to a -down on their luck family. (It's just not)

The new trend as mentioned in the story is to move these cases out of the poor parts of town and move them into the better parts apparently so some of that same magic called success, rubs off onto them.

Rather than move poor folks into a home they could never afford as is the goal of the State Plan..... this family took it one step further by moving into a home poor people would never... ever, afford.

We have seen no evidence these folks are "gaming the system" but rather moving in the direction these Public programs are aiming for:

-Give people stuff they never worked for

-Relocate them into "nice neighborhoods" to break the welfare mentality... and to acclimate the middle and upper middle class to the "have nots" by moving them in next door.

Isn't this what the OCCUPY movement was all about, the 99% getting what the 1% have?

THIS IS WHAT GOVERNMENT DOES PEOPLE.... GET OVER IT.

I'd much rather see folks like this on welfare than a baby mama with fo' kids all wearing Jordans.

who owns the house? They get vouchers for rent, payable to whom?

It's not. I'd love it if all our "free money" went to successful people. It'd be cheaper in the long run.

I'd rather the money went to people who really need it, who can't find a job, but are actually looking. These deadbeat leeches that collect now are the ones ruining it for those who actually need it.

several posts removed for baiting and other tos violations. the below are returned minus the quoting of those posts or with the tos violation removed:

In that other thread on the worst run states...the one where California finished dead last, it also stated that California had the second highest number of people who never graduated from high school and after reading your post on here I see your one of those. If you have reading comprehension problems than I can't help you, but if you can read and comprehend the English language you should be good to go. And as far as crying about construction workers getting a free ride on unemployment...deal with it or join the trades.

Both programs hand free money to people. Money that is not theirs to begin with. Money that used to belong to someone else.

Like I just posted in a reply to you on another thread, if you want skilled tradesmen to build those high rises, bridges,, chemical plants, pipe lines etc correctly and by code... and still cut them off from unemployment when the work dries up then you can come up with a solution. I'm all ears on this one. What is your solution for skilled tradesmen that run out of work in their field? Remember now those are the people who build what others use, and I'm not talking residential houses here.

I would like to see them reform welfare also, and take that money saved and put it into unemployment benefits and/or job training. Personally I wouldn't mind another raise on my unemployment checks. The extra money could go to something useful like faster internet in my house or a another porn channel.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I read about this somewhere else and it said the woman got the vouchers and listed the husband as the landlord.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that charges my wife rent.

Great - tis fraud. Take them away, put the house up for auction - proceeds go to the local foodbank.

Proceeds should be returned to the tax payers... not other lazy poor people.

If you're going to pay someone to kick them out, pay someone to process the sale, paperwork, etc., then GIVE THE MONEY AWAY, why even bother? You've already given the money away once. You want to pay someone to give it away again?

Here's the problem with all you do-gooders. You want to give money to the "right people" but don't realize the more you help them, the more you cost ALL people.
