Is it just me or has going through immigration really put wedding planning into perspective?

i don't really believe in doing something just because everyone else does it hence why i wasn't so bother about a big wedding just as long i was legally married to my wife i was more then happy, and if need be that we feel that we want a big wedding with all the other stuff, then we can renew the vows but all the worrying about immigration and the cost i didn't think i then needed to spend ALOT of money on a wedding

Indeed, immigration is expensive but it's money well spent

Spending $20,000 for a single day however, is a little ridiculous when a nice meaningful ceremony could be done at a quarter of the cost.

I am the petitioner.

 Well said :) Likewise, I registered for that site and get sooo many emails that I no longer read them and just delete. It actually does the opposite for me than what it's supposed to do and makes me want to have a very small celebration when my honey gets here w/o all the crazy big wedding stuff...the journey we're on right now truly does put many things in perspective...not being with the one you love is very hard, but when we have them back in our arms... I love this!

We had the most simple wedding ever. I had no dress, no venue, no seating plans, no guest list, no flowers. It was me, my son, my (now) husband, his mum, sister, best friend and the nice woman from the court house who married us in the sunshine. My son wanted a toy with his dinner so we went to burger king, I wouldn't change a single thing about it.

I feel the same way! A small intimate wedding, in my opinion, is much more honorable to your future spouse than some elaborate over the top bash. I've seen some couples actually split because over the top wedding planning got the best of them. No thanks. My honey and I are planning on having our reception at my parent's home. My cousin is making our wedding cookies, a very close family friend is going to do the reception decorating. I love the personal feel of it. :)

I am planning a small wedding and even if I had the money I wouldn't see myself having a big wedding or spending 30,000.

My budget is under $5,000 for everything ,as living in NYC doesn't help much .

My big splurge will be on a photographer and dinner for around 18-25 close relatives & friends.

Anyways :ot2: At the end of the day you just want to tie the knot and be with your love one. MR & MRS :)

Our wedding cost less than $2K. Rings included.

And I looked damn good too.

We got married in a hotel suite with about 10 people there. Had a fancy dinner in the restaurant, replete with cake and booze.

I bet you can do it for way less that 5K.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Most people dream of having the perfect wedding but we here just dream of having a wedding.

I personally am not fond of a huge elaborate ceremony and it boggles my mind how much some women obsess over every single minute detail of their wedding.

I joined TheKnot.com to help in creating a wedding guest list and wedding website but I sometimes get ridiculous emails like "practice your wedding hairstyle a few times before the actual day!" or "never have a friend or family member bake your wedding cake! Always hire a professional!" Ridiculously absurd. Who cares if your hair isn't perfect the day of your wedding? And if you want to have a friend or family member bake your cake, why not? Again, perfection does not have to be attained. It's one day!

I personally have more important things to think about than the color of ink that I'm printing my wedding invitations in or taste testing the food that will be served at our reception. Among these important things are actually getting my fiance here so we can procede with the said wedding

I don't want to remember the day of my wedding as the exact hue of my bridesmaid dresses or the flavor of the wedding cake or obessing about the exact placement of the table centerpieces.

I want to remember it as the day that I became legally wed to the most wonderful man and that we will never have to be separated again.

Maybe it's the whole immigration process, but my wedding day has really been placed into perspective for me. This whole planning receptions, rehearsal dinners, going on extreme weight loss plans, finding "the perfect florist" and other silly frivilous nonsense is not for me.

I just want to marry the love of my life, honor our cultural backgrounds, family and friends, with a small celebration afterwards and finally begin our lives together :)

so true, ours is going to be in our home by the ocean with a few good friends a immediate family, then the following day we are having a party and having a pizza truck set up outside and bake delicious pizzas for everyone with gelato and espresso coffees. looking forward to just being together and not having to say good bye in an airport again.

Spending money on a wedding is all relative to your budget , and what you feel comfortable. Some folks will spend $5000, while others may spend $100,000. It's a personal thing b/t the couple.

Challenge accepted... heheheh

I like the Hotel suite idea. I am still reviewing my options.

Also his parents are coming from Germany :D and my mom is traveling to NY too so lets see how we manage.

I want to shorten my list of guess to the JUST the necessary ones to cut more cost.

My sister was telling me that it would be rude not to invite Blu or Bla, so I just answered, "BLU or Bla can come as long as you pay the $100 something per diner per each of them yourself  "

Unfortunately here one has to forget about wedding etiquette and go by "WHAT MY pocket Can afford and WHAT YOU WANT etiquette".

I feel for you! We were planning to have a small wedding within 90 days of entering the US and a bigger one next Spring but one day the weather became better and we didn't feel like doing 2 weddings anymore. So we planned a traditional outdoor wedding in 6 days! Cost about 2k for 30-50 people and it was a beautiful Fall afternoon.

We have both been married before and we are in our 40s so it's not going to be huge for us. She wanted a small wedding, and dummy me listened to her. Men! Do the opposite of what women say! We have friends and family self-inviting themselves, I guess it could be worse but we are forging ahead with our plans. 4 weeks and a day! And we still need to get rings. I better start shopping.

I totally agree with you. All those money spent for 1 day will still be a part of our memories. May it be expensive or cheap, it's still the same feeling you'll get to be happily married with the person you truly love :)
