Well, as I understand it, in Ecuador they call fresas "frutillas"

I asked Mrs. T-B.; unless I butchered the word badly (always a real possibility, except that she didn't look alarmed and point me to the nearest baño), she had never heard of "frutilla," no man.

WE had a interesting transition, Going from quechua ( Andean Language ) to english. that was interesting.. any one else had to do quechua or aymara??

Really? I had a co-worker from Quito a few years tell me that they never said fresa in Ecuador, they always used frutilla which I found weird because I had never heard that word before. She also told me that they called bathing suits mallas, when in Colombia we call it vestido de baño or traje de baño, never heard of malla being used that way.

Ah, si man -- this revives memories of when I lived in the Washington, DC area in a previous life. I'd sometimes drive into the District to eat at a rather seedy Chinese restaurant that had great food. They finally replaced their food-stained menus with fancier laminated ones. Chief on the menu was "Wanton Soup." I saw that and exclaimed, "I'll have three bowls, si man!"

I forgot to mention earlier that, during our visit to the Mexican supermarket, the carnicerio (butcher) asked Mrs. T-B. if she wanted chicharron (among the dozens of dollars in other meats that she bought). I said, "En nuestra casa" (which I think means "in our house"), and I made a motion of punching myself. The carnicerio smiled, then looked alarmed and pointed me toward the nearest bathroom, sigh man.

In Peru, chicharron can also mean seriously mangled/bruised; as in: "el carro estaba hecho chicharron despues del choque"; or, "quedo como chicharron luego que su mujer le dio una tanda"

That must have been a huge challenge! Do you speak some Quechua? Even if you did, it would have been a huge transition for your spouse. At least with Spanish, a lot of people know what you're saying and you always have cognates to rely on. I've been trying to learn Quechua for years and haven't gotten past being able to talk about animals and food.

You know, Quechua professors are in high demand in some US universities. It's one of the key national security languages due to our uber-intelligent coca eradication programs. Backup career for your spouse?
