What would you do with a million dollars?

Reading the linked article about a woman who won $1million in the NY lottery (twice) started me wondering about your ideas...

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14751656/?GT1=8506

Let's say 'a large sum of money' turned up on your doorstep (so disregard let's the "I'm for/against the lottery" arguments for now... start another thread for that if you like...). After you've paid off any/all of your debts, you still have $1million leftover to spend any way you choose.

Would you continue to work? Same job, different job? Save all or a portion of the money? Travel? Where? Donate? To whom? Gifts? What? Other???

I thought about creating a poll but didn't want to limit people's ideas...

Anyone ever thought about this? :D

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

I heard that a 'rule of thumb' for investing a million bucks you can expect annual return of 50k. if that where true, I am not sure Icould retire. I'd prolly work a bit more to accumulate a bit more to buy a house wherever we decide we want to retire at.

I would keep the same job but work part-time and go back to school. I would buy a car, a house, and a new house for my dad. I would also buy a house in Morocco that my husband keeps telling me about, and I would invest what's leftover.

I've amused myself on many a drive home from work thinking this through.......

$100,000 (10%) will be my tithe (a Biblical principle I live by)

$250,000 or so to buy a house and property in my home province

$100,000 divided amongst our 4 nieces and nephews and invested for their future education

$50,000 or so to get my husband his dream car

$100,000 to divide amongst family

a little bit of play money for me

and the rest invested :)

Being that you will never see a million, I would have to see what I was left with after taxes and taking the cash payout. I figure I would probably still work since I only have 5 years to retire anyway. I guess one of the first things I would do is move into a larger house in a nice neighborhood. Other than that I can't really think of anything I would run out to buy, but sure wife would come up with a few ideas. LOL

Hmm. Well as mdyoung said, it wouldn't end up being a mil. Be nice to have but you couldn't be stupid with it.

I'd pay off my bills for sure. I'd stop worrying about tuition.

Other than that I'd have to hire a financial planner to help me figure out the rest.
