My bride to be is Filipino. Any information about hurdles I should expect would be welcome. (i.e. problems caused by a clash of cultures)

there's going to be a lot of changes.. I'm not so sure about Philippines's culture but I guess it's not so much different than mine :D

Communication is the way.. She can be shy about new things, might need to be shown how to use electronic stuff like dish washer etc.. she might keep to her self anything that she doesnt like and might not talk about her feeling about things..have difficulty fining cloth size... doesnt understand why the taxes are not already added to the goods...why it is so difficult to find somthing to eat :P list goes on but she might be opposite than what i wrote!

(I just wrote about what i've heard from this forum and my friends experiences - and a little of my own :P )

But i'm sure you will have a great time together!

by the way.. if you know somebody from Philippines in your community then that might also help.

Well they whine at first like they are going to die if they don't eat rice 24/7, but I made it clear that I'm not eating rice with every meal, so my wife eats it only a couple times a weeks. Daughter hardly ever touches the stuff anymore.

My biggest complaint is wife being afraid to speak up for herself to not make waves. For example she said she didn't get time to eat lunch at work today. I said did you say anything? Well no. I told then who's fault is that.

When she first got here she bought a shirt that felll apart when she washed it. I said then lets take it back, she wouldn't even go up to the counter with me because she was "ashamed" to ask for her money back. That's the kind of goofy thing that drives me over the edge.

One of the other is the goofy superstition type things that she comes off with sometimes. Like don't take a shower when you are hot, you need to rest first. I said taking a shower when you are hot and sweaty is part of resting.

Now on the somewhat positive side the house will always be clean, but don't sit something down and think it will be there when you go back to get it. LOL

Thanks for the information. I am not worried about Jenny not being assertive. She reminds me of Maude in "all of the family". If I have a problem I will say "Get them Maude (Jenny). The superstitions are amazying yet fun. Has she told you about the "people you can't see" yet?

Gosh, I can't pass this up:

I lived and worked in VN for 5 years and I went through many relationships/dates before I finally found my wife and it took me 2 years to totally trust her and be accepted by her whole family in VN. Therefore, I have a lot of reservations about the "K1 fiancee visa" between western guys (NOT of VNs ancestry, "Viet Kieu") and Vietnamese women. My opinion, the odds are against a long-term successful marriage.

The Vietnamese and Thais think a lot a like, but I'm not certain about Phillipinos?

Your Q re Problems: (from my experience and other VNs/American couples in both VN & USA)

1.) mdyoung made some good points

2.) Acting like an immature teenager living inside an adult body (totally illogical)

3.) Jealousy, Irrational Control, arguing over irrelevant matters, food/cooking, communication gaps and mostly small stuff, which can be funny :)

Finally, it's a lot easier after the the first year and personally I've been very fortunate to date.

Use google and find some asian (korean, filipino, thai, chines, vietnamese etc) supermarkets. Though my wife is Thai we often shop at Filipino markets.
