questions about irs tax transcripts?

first off.....I was told by a friend that the IRS joint tax transcripts would be better than out turbotax print outs and w2 copies?

aside from a comment I just saw on here, is there any other reason other than turbo tax copies maybe doctored that they are better than and is the turbo tax paper work really worthless? that along with our w2s is what we sent last time but we did get an interview but they said nothing about our taxes

secondly if we send the joint IRS tax transcripts should we also send the w2s? (will only be hubby's as i am a house wife therefore no income of my own or w2) and do we just post the photocopies or the originals of the tax transcripts?

thirdly.....is the how do we get them...I was told automated phone number..does anyone have this number? and what information do we need at hand when ordering them? is it just our ssns or will we need some special code off of something?

thanks in advance

Hannah, it's not about proving income like before. This is now proving "jointness." His Affidavit of support didn't even have to be joint. The W2 only has his name on it. A Turbotax joint filing with only his W2 would be easy to fake. A transcript comes from IRS records. And I've seen a number of RFEs asking specifically for transcripts. I only submitted page 1 of our transcripts because that showed both our names filing jointly, which was all they needed to see, not our whole income.

If you call 1-800-908-9946 (the transcript line), there is an automated system for ordering transcripts. You'll have to enter Vito's Social Security number and the numbers of your street address. It will generate an automated request to mail your transcripts.

Thanks Nich-Nick I am guessing then by just using his ssn and our street address the tax transcript will have us both on it automatically because we filed jointly? reading that back that sounds like the most obviously stupid question ever :unsure:

Yes, a transcript of the joint return. And you can get multiple years with one call. Mine came in a week's time.

I ordered ours online for free from IRS website. Got the years I wanted and it has both names on it etc.

I just put the copys the IRS sent me in the packet didn't bother with making copys of it because they are free and I can order them online again really easily if i need some more.

If you want it faster check to see if there is a local IRS office. I just walked in and had transcripts printed out, although unless there is some reason they should be suspicious not sure why Turbo Tax printouts/W2 cannot work?

As Nich-Nick said the W2 only has his name on. Transcripts will show both names. It is also less paper to deal with and probably what they are more used to dealing with. It only takes a week for them to arrive and they're free so it's worth it to avoid an RFE which will slow things down longer than the week it takes for them to arrive! :)

Yup! Call the number listed. It's such an easy process. I ended up talking with a person, because I had issues ordering the tax transcripts through the automated system. They were very helpful and I got the tax transcripts for 09 and 10, within a week. It's free, so don't worry about turbo tax...just order the tax transcripts and use those to send with your package.

Return transcripts.

If you were living at a different address when you filed one of the returns you are ordering, I would suggest using the automated phone service rather than the internet. When we used the internet they sent the transcripts to the old address, rather than the more recent one. The phone system though gets you to confirm your address.

thanks we haven't moved yet so we opted for the online as it was quick and simple and hubby was busy studying for work training so we will try those first.....we asked for return transcripts not the account ones is that ok?
